He@sPITAL FOR CHILDREN. aE CHARITY —— ¢ The Simterhoad of St. John’s. A new charitahle institution in thie city is thus advertised im the columns ot Taw STA&. * Hospital for Children. under care of St. Jobn’ Sisterhood. Appiy to the Sister ia charge, 1215 Penneyivaniaavenne,” Within a few years past Washington has taken vast strides towards her proper piace of a motro- politan eity. THE CAYITAL OF A GREAT NATION like ours must necessarily become a great city. whither shall gather population, where shall be stored libraries, galleries of paintings, collec- tions of sculpture, and all treasures of art and iDustrative works of. genius; but with this Erowth and the infowing population, attracted y the manifold advan of the place, there will come the idle, the vicious, the improvident and the unfortunate—all those who constitute that clase that must be cared for by the com- munity or become an element of danger. Already we are finding that the new order of things is calling for more and larger agencies of benevolence. Impressed with a sense of the the need of @ house, home, or hospital where sick children could be cared for, the ladies’ SI8TERHOOD OP ST. JOHN'S (Episcopal) church set about devising ways and | sister] - means to establish one. This hood is com- posed of some fifteen or twenty young ladies of the parish, who have associated themselves to- gether by mutual promises to devote a certain amount of their time and labor to the cause ot benevolence. In every respect the organization \« Purely voluntary. “These ladies found that no existing hospital had ACCOMMODATIONS POR SICK CHILDREN, and, as a rale, they were denied admission by all. But at this point they were confronted by the fact that a large amount of money woul’ be required to hire a house, to furnish it, and prepare the equipment requisite for its pur- poses. Patiently they went to work. soliciting contributions, and upwards of $800 have been obtained towards paying the first year’s ex- nses. The largest part of house No. 1915 enarty ania avenue has been hired for a year. One of the ladies of the sisterhood, who has so often Se audiences here, im Philadel- phia, and New York, as “MRS. JABLEY,” IN THE “WAX-WORKS SHOW” utertainments given for the sole purpose of for charitable purposes, has ad- fund thus earned enough (upwards of $1,000) to furnish the house in a simple and unostentatious manner. A skilfal and experienced lady has been engaged as Sis- ter in charge, (matron,) and four or five mem- bere of the sisterhood have mutually agreed to devote, by turns, one month entirely, as Sister Resident, to the business of the hospital. ‘TRE HOSPITAL has two wards, each of which will accommo- date five patients. His text was from the 6th chapter of the Ephesians, 2ith verse : “Grace be with all them who love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity.” He wipes away the old stigma upon the church, that she proudly holds herself above other denominations that have not the episcopate or the three orders of the ministry, and not recognize them 4s churches. He clearly establishes that the church, whilst protesting against corruptions of the taith, is so guarded in her phraseology as not to aise just cause of olfence and that she fully recognizes the church stat~ of religious bodies uot having the epixco- 4. and the Christian character nd tellc (i@°S their individual members. He declares these to be the rocks on either hand, betwixt which, under God, the ark of Christ's’ church must be steered, and proclaims himself of those who hold to the all- sufficing protestant character and spirit of the present formularies of the church. ——-e ‘THE Fresca Fam—Relief of the Sufferers by ‘he Wor.—Pursuant to a call signed by Mrs. General Sherman and others, a large number of the sympathizers with France in the present European st met at Marini’s Hall yes- terday at one o'clock, for the purpose of con- certing measures for the relief of the widows and orphans, as well as the wounded of the French soldiery.
