H. Semimes secretary, was unanimously agreed that the contract should be given to Peter McNa- mara, the contractor for paving Indiana avenue from the depot to 4th street—the blue stone por- tiov at the rate of his old contract, and the wooden portion at the rate at which it is pro- pores to pave Pennsylvania avenue. The Bal- Ml pavement was adopted, with the proviso that hard white pine wood should be used. The Mayor was authorized to enter into contract ‘with Mr. McNamara, and to push the work as rapidly as possible. . he contract price at which the blue stone ‘will be laid is $1.55 per yard, which is stated to be a lower figure than has ever been received for similar work from other contractors, and the price to be paid for the wood pavement (Ballard’s patent, represented here y Mr. T. ‘T. Fowler.) will be the average of the four kinds on the avenue. Mr. McNamara entered into contract this afternoon, and filed his bond for the faithful performance of the work, which ‘will amount fo $100,000, if not over. Mr. MeNa- mara hs on hand now an extensive contract for paving the streets in the vicinity of the depot. and hes already completed the paving of © etr trom Jd street to New Jersey avenue, mi Indiana avenue, from 4th street to New lersey avenue, and is at present at work on New Jersey avenue, from B to F streets. {t is stated that the commission in awarding this new work to Mr. McNamara, did so because of the Teatonableners of his proposition, and also be- cause the work he bas thus far completed bas been done in a very faithful and s: tory manner. There are some contractors who con- sider t! they have been overslaughed by the commission, and there is some talk of an in- ction being asked for. It is the intention of . McNamara to enter on the work immeidi- ately, and complete it at the ver: ately and comp e very earliest pos- CENTRAL BUILDING AsRocIATION—4A New ‘ature —The sixty-first monthly meeting ot this association was held last evening at the City Hall. SA; bought out—tst Tee Pavewent ESTION.. ments, Stow, Miller, Follansbee and Kobbins, selected for paving Pennsylvania avenue, seem to give general satisfaction: but even among there there is evidently a choice. The great Tault in wooden pavements is that they give out the bottom through rot. This happens in those pavements where the wood used has not been treated by any preserving process Now the Kobbins pavement, we understand, is not only thoroughly treated in every part—blocks, stringers and keys—but has the advantage over all the other three, that the blocks are held firmly in position by being keyed at the bottom: that is, the pavement is formed upon the principle of the key and arch, the most perfect form for strength known in mechanism. The paving of Penn‘yl- Yania avenue, We suppose, is a settled fact as to the styles to be used: but we su; it to the citi- zens a careful consideration of the merits of the Robbins pavement over all others in all future contracts for paving. Unpreserced wood will rot, and it seems too lad that three-fourths of our Gne avenue should be paved with such ma- terial instead of with wood preser-rd. which will not rot, such as is to be usedon the o.es fouria, in Jaying the Kobbins patent. * ‘be four pave- Vertum say =a Rarcriicay Bageeccus at MARLnORO’— A large and enthusiastic republican meet! was held eaten at Marlboro, Prince Geo county, Marj land 4 when a grand barbecue and celebration took place, which was peSoones 00 persons.
