There seems to be no doubt that these statements are correct; that his true name is Charles E. Cady; that he has a wife and daugh- ter in Brighampton, N. He was employed ‘in the Treasury Department ever 183, and had the entire confidence of the officials there u to the time of his confession of fraud. it was admitted by himself that he had a fam- ily there, and he represents that the lady whom be married here in February last was aware of the fact. T° Plant to berudjudicn |. Weare nota lawyer, and are alike unacquainted with the tribune and the parties to the action. But the decision given in the case seems so unjast and | illogical; and it it is really so the public become an interested party. ‘There is and can be no question that the rail- road company have the right to make any ne- essary rule ce regulations for the ouch of the road and its branches that is working «| § | and does not revualy incommode or trench hts of rs. For tvstance, bow absurd and unjust wo would be regulations re- quiring passengers to walk up Capitol Hill, to wait tive or ten minutes at intersections (rain or shine), to stand up in the cars and hold on to soiled straps to keep from breaking their necks, or to accept a seat upon the lap of some benev- olent passenger or to receive a weary one upon our Own knees, yet these ‘things and worse are ing dope in ‘Jericho, ‘The company is a common carrier, is bound in equity and law bo ge fare received from a pas- senger to carry him in a safe and comfortable manner from the place he enters the car to the terminos of the road or any one of its branches, if they have not already been passed, should he desire to go so far. Rol what process of reasoning or jvstice can it be made to appear that although the transfer 4 good for the whole, it is not good for a part ot the route ? As there is neither logic or equity in the de- cision of the Justice referred to we strongly sus- pect that if the question be ever brought before a court and jury, it will be shown that it is not in accordance with law. It should be a matter of indifference, and is really @ gain to the company, where the party rightfully holding a transfer walks a quarter or er the distance that his tickets entitles him to bs But it isevident that the company wants to ——— the obligation they are under to carry rs on transfer tickets, or to so hedge Teen about with conditiors and inconveniences as to compell those entitled to them and their benefits to pay. an additional fare.
