The sum was raised.” — RoBeery or A HARDWARE STORE, AND Stx- <GULAR DISCOVERY OF THE GOODS.—On the night of the 12th of May last the store of Joseph L. Savage,on D, near 10th street, robbed of goods valued at #300. The case wes kept quiet, and the detectives have been on the alert ever since for the discevery of the thief. The mest remarkable feature about the robbery was that there were no tracks left by which the officers could obtain a clue to the theft. Yesterday detectives Coomes and Miller, from informa- tion they had, entered the lager beer saloon of George Heilener on 10th street, whose premi- ses joins the rear of Mr. ——. store, and in a chamber in the house found all the stolen with the exception of some #40 worth, which had been pawned. The pawn tickets were found in the possession ot Heifener, and the ofticers took him into custody at once, and locked him up in the Central guard house. When questioned as to how he obtained possession of the goods, he said he found them in one of his rooms. He willbe peje ad before the police court to-day. The following items are from the Gazette of last evening: CoxFLict oF AUTHORITY.—Thejoiticers and members of the new police torce were instra-- ed by the Police Board to meet at the May:r's office at noon to-day, for the purpo.e of being sworn into office by the Mayor aud to be put on duty at once. A conference between the Mayor and the Board of Police in the Mayor’s office at the hour appointed for the new force ty meet there, resulted in a disagreement—the former insisting that the members of the force mu-t be bonded, and the latter that such bon ing was unnecessary—and terminated wit out the administration of the oath of office to any of the new force, all of whom with many of their triends had been waiting in the ‘market house porch for seyeral honrs. After the termination of the conference, the Ksoard of Police consulted the corporation at- torney, F.L. Smith, Jr,, and upon his advice determined to swear in the new force before a magistrate. They cor juently repaired to the market-house porch, and at halt-past 2 o'clock this evening Justice W. May, in the presence ot Mesrs. French, Wheat and Brice, of the Po- tice Board, administered an oath to the privates and officers of the new force toexceute the laws of the corporation, and to discharge the duties of jicemen faithiully. Mr. heat then divided the torce in three squads of seven each, designaged each man by a certain num- ber, instructed Captain Webster to take charge of the first squad and place iton duty at once, and directed the two other syuads to as- semble at the watch-house at ten o’clock to-night @imrelieve squad No. 1, and to re- main on till 6 o'clock to-morrow morning. As soon rs the irstructions were delivered Mayor Latham appeared, and, addressing Capt. Webster, said: “I forbid you or apy others trom obéying these instructions and from poing on duty.” Captain Webster replied, “I was elected by the Council and I shall obey their orders.” He then called squad No. 1 together and marched them off to their respective beats. The Mayor immediately issued orders suspend- ing the members of the Board of Police, and the captain and lieutenant of police, and has published notices directing the members of the ed Council to assemble in special meeting to- night, declaring his intention of assuming com- mand or the night watch, and calling upon the citizens for support. A PERANGED Man Ktriep.—Night before last, as we are informed, a young man, named Pollard, who lived in Charlottesville with his mother, and whose mind became deranged du- ring the war in consequence of a wound in the head from a shell, suceceded in eluding the vigi- lance of those in whose care he was, and divest- ing himseif of all clothing, started ‘up the rail- road track as fast as he could run, passing in his flight one or two persons, who were unable to stop him.
