Terms 50 cents per month. = + ‘The War tu Ew ‘The uncertainty as te the point at which Na- poleon would make his first advance upon Prus- sia is dispelled by our cable telegrams else- where, which tell us that the French troops have crossed the frontier at Saarbrucken, or Saarbrack. It has been stated that the Ger- man troops occupied Saarbruck on Monday; but this must have been untrue, or they did not oc- eupy it in force, as our telegrams to-day make no mention of any fighting at that point. Saarbruck is a frontier towh of Rhenish Pras. sia, s few miles from Forbach, on the direct | railway route from Metz to Mayence and Mann- i heim, and at the junction of another line run- ning northwestward to Treves. It is quently a good strategical position from which to meet a movement from Metz, either north- | ward along the valley of the Moselle and through Thionville, or westward by the railway straight towards Mannbeim. It is situated, we may add, on the Saar river. the chiet tribotary to the Moselle, and is con- | nected with the right bank of the river and its snburb. St. Johany, by a stone bridge. It has @ population of about 9,960, engaged principally im the manufacture of woollen cloths and in mining. there being extensive mines of iron and coal in the vicinity. The towm was founded in the tenth century, and was given to the Charch of Met» by the Emperor Henry IIf. It was af- terward= governed by Conant till 1350, when it was attached to the duehy of Nawau. At one | time strongly fortitted, it became an object of @ttae® on the part of the Freneb, and was re- ' Peatediy taken and retaken. In 16i6 its forti fieations were dismantled. During the wars of Napoleon it sutiered severely, and was annexed | tothe empire. By the treaty of Paris of 1315 | the place was ceded to Prussla, by whom it has since been held. Saarbrack is thirteen miles from Saarlouis, | the only well advanced Prussian fortress fur the defence c nine on the frontier. This for- | tress | Saarlowi~) is a small and antiquated work on the Saar. It is believed to be entirely inate- quate to the demand for an advanced past to hold the French im cheek, ur for a base of ope- Fations. however, very important and Practical roads leading to Metx, Treves, May- ence, Manheim, and Lanau; and Saarbruck, as we have stated, bas a similar janction of ex- eelient macadamized reads. ‘Thst the Prussians should allow Napoleon to pes 4 of Saarbruck unchallenged would ‘tm to indicate that they lack the alertness of \F the campaign of IN, but donbtiess Von Moltke | has good sisatezic reasons for not making a | stand at th German engineers have | weak side | the vieinity | acut. Widdern, | prononnces it the “Paris j gate of Germany,” aud laments that it is so carelessly left open. Some have thought that Napoleon instead of designing @ campaign om the Khine, really | mtended to open his fighting on the south- | eastern coast of the North Sea, whereby he hg could use his superior nary te support a for- mmidabie attack on either Bremen or Hambarg. dust beyond lies the long disputed territory of | Schleswig and of Holstein, recently oceupied by Prussia, but in which a large purt of the people are of Danish origin, and are hostile to the Ger- mans. By occupying this region Napoleon might reasonably hope to cement an alliance with Denmark, which would secure te him Co- penhagen as a base of naval operations against the Prussian coast, and increase the disaffection of Hanoverians towards the monarchy at Berlin. But it would seem now that bis main line of Operations will be upon the Rhine via the Mo- Selle. The Moselie furnishes the most direct hne of operations between France and Prassia, running almost i the direct line between Ber- lin and Paris, and the invading party on cither side must need strong special reasons to cause them to operate on any other line. — -wee- there were seventy one-eases of sun- in New Vork yesterday—forty-six fatal. ——_—___-~<ee- 7 The tund for the support and educ: the three orphan children of Captain Wi Of the Oneida has reached 26,000. roke CITIZENS OF THE SOUTH TRMPORA ily living im Washington are reqaestel to meet at Union League Hall, en street. for the par pore of orzanizing a Southern Hepublicaa Acs olen fiom. t feBEL AH DEGRER ASqoc “TATION. fiows are fraternally invtt ut SWNA | SEMONDS, Re te Semon City iar, Board’ ot wil please present thew Sines of meeting, rand ne attendance J Sussixe at: Bah ng change fet amselling my stork 6 cout sth 26 ye b “S BELURR 715 Market Space. iy 166" Near Scventh OF FICK SEC Y BUAKD OF BEAL sHINGTON, D.C, Ink ri 1570. her this auto's he wiice of Secretary Beard of ie will be at Ho. 466 C street northwest, Boom oe Pye be in attendance daily (Sanday yee ee D.
