The absence of a borrowing demand for gold shows that the Wall street with it under difficulties abroad will home our bonds and occasion heavy ex- orts of specie. The tone of our exchanges continue 2o show that American sympathy is very gener- ily on the side of Prussia, the only exception Deing in the case of some of the southern papers. This exceptional sympathy from that section may be accounted for, perhaps, from the fact that during the rebellion the sympathies and aid Of Napoleon were given to the South, while Prussia was friendly to the Union. One cause for the preponderance of sympathy in behalf of Prussia in this country is doubtless from the large German element in our midst. in our city, for instance, the extent of that ele- qent may be judged from the size of the pro- Session that passed the streets to-day On its way to the German Festival at the Schaet- zen Park. And whether from North Germany or South Germany it is all the same; they all 2 ap wih Pra and every portion of it, in with France. It will be idle for Na+ to send his friendly proclamations to the South German States. Public impatience expected a great battle within ferty-eight hours of the declaration of hostilities, amd there were reports in the morn- ing papers of a conilict at Forbach, in France, but there is not only no confirmation of the reperts, but the probabilities are all against its occurrence, and especially on French soil. It must be remembered that every passage on the ime between France and Prussia is heavily fortified, on either side, and it is probable that more or less siege work will precede any battles tm the open field. Our dispatches, up toa late hour this after- ‘noon, show that no collision had occurred; and the government also, up to 2% p. m.,had not a word to indicate any fighting in progress. Meantime, however, the diplomats are busy, and the different European powers are announc- ing the position they will take in the contest. ‘The most of these definitions of status are con- ditional, however, and bind the powers that make them to little or nothing. see. ‘The power of the sun’s beat just now is curi- Ously illustrated on the line of the F street rail- way. The track layers on that road, between 7th and lith streets failed to make allowance for the expansion and contraction of the iron, by placing the joints so close together as to allow no play or space for the lengthening of the rails in hot weather. The result is that at numerous places between the points named the rails have been forced to find room by drawing the spikes and raising themselves in the form of a bow or arch from two to three inches above the timbers upon which they are laid. Asa consequence, a Tide over that part of the line is at present some- what like the rolling of a vessel, and the effect Presented to the eye is is decidedly odd.
