The building at present con- tracted for, however, embraces only one-third <r and the remainder will be left until next year. The building is to be seven stories high, the ceilings to be 1:4, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13 and 12 feet respectively. The plans are by Messrs. Starkweather & Plowman, archi- tects. The style is Romanesque and French. ‘The materiai for the walls is Seneca freestone. This building is to be of the most substantial character, and the ornamentation quite elab- orate and tasteful. The foundation wall is to be three feet thick, and of the same stone. The walls resting on this foundation are to be 26 inches in thickness, and taper upwards to 13 inches at top, and are to be constructed hollow, (the inner surface of brick.) which is regarded as the most substantial kind of wall, and affords ventilation throughout. The joists are all to be 4 inches deep, and the lower story fire-proof. All the cornices and root decorations are to be of galvanized iron and stone. ‘1 cost of this entire building is $300,000, and one- third of itis to be put under cover this season. ‘The contractor is Mr. Robert Fleming, of this city, and the stone work by Mr. Michael A. MeGowan. The building committee are Messrs. J. W. Alvord, C D.3. Eaton, Z. Richards, Geo. W. Balloch, Col. — Cole, L. P. Tattle. and Walker Lewis. This building, when fin- ished, will be an ornament to that section of the city. aa A GOVERNMENT CLERK ARRESTED ON THE CHARGE oF STEALING MonzY PROM LETTERS. Asa D. Wood, a first class clerk in the Dead Letter office, was arrested yesterday atternoon on the charge of purloining money and was taken to police head«uarters, where was retained until this morning taken to the Police Court, where waived an examination and was held to bail in the sum of $500 tor his appearance before the Criminal Court. At noon to-day he had not succeeded in obtaining security. Money has been missing for some time in this office, anda letter containing ten dollars and fifty cents was used asadecoy,the money a ed and afterwards found in his pocket. The ac~ cused denied any knowledge of the money when first charged, but on being taken into a room to be searched the money was found in his pocket book, as before stated. Tur W. A. axp G. R. R. This company contends that, as by a decision of the urt of Appeals of Virginia and the United States Supreme Court of Virginia, the Virginia portion of the road has been delivered into their poss« sion, the interests of the whole road would Promoted by placing the entire line under one management. Two officers and others had pointed out Penot as the guilty party, and he was taken to the sixth pre- cinct station and turned over to Lieut.
