Terms 50 cents per month. — ss0e- it seems to us that aia ae very silly and useless thing in keeping up, in this country, the celebration of the anniversary of “the battle of the Boyne,” where Protestant Irishmen fought Catholic Irishmen nearly two centuries ago; but the “ Ribbon-men” do a das- tardly thing when they, ason Tuesday last, in New York, assail men, women and children, as- sembled peaceably in a park, commemorating the day. The historical events connected with this anniversaty may be briefly recited as fol- lows:—In the ninth century there was founded in the south of France a principality of Orange, which, in 1570, fell by inheritance into the pos- session of a Dutch Prince—the Prince of Nas- sau—the ancestor of that William of Orange who, in the revolution of 1683, was called to the throne of England. His predecessor and com- petitor, James II., found a loyal support in Ire- land, and so it came to pass that @ hundred and | ty years ago, July 1, 1690, old style, (July | new style,) the great battle of the Boyne was fought, which decided not only the fate of the house of Stuart in England, but also that of | the Catholic religion, James being a Catholic | and William a Protestant. ‘The affair at Elm Park, New York, Tuesday, wasone of the most shamefal in all aspects, | ever heard of in that city, and we trust the civil | authorities will deal sharply and decisively with the parties who were responsible for it. {n the morning the Orangemen formed down town, and marched up to the Park, their banners in- scribed with thenames of “Boyne,” “Aughrim,” “Derry,” and other names obnoxious to the Catholic Irishmen, while their bands played *Croppies, lie down,” “Protestant Boys,” Sc. ‘The nearer they approached the Park the greater became the number of Fenians, who fol- lowed in their wake growling detiance. Finally, the entire body of men at work on the Boule- vard struck work, and proceeded in a body to Elm Park, armed with their pickaxes and shovels, determined to cleanout the Urangemen. In the meantime the people at the pic-nic, who were quiet and orderly, went to dancing, eating their dinners on the grass, etc. There were about three thousand of them, the most of their | party being defenceless women and children. Upon these the six handred laborers aforesaid | made their attack, which was opened by the firing of about twenty pistols. The combat be- | came desperate and bloody, extending not only | about the Park, but for some distance along | Fifth avenue. The result was three men killed | few'ot th outright—two Ribbonmen and an Orangeman— one so seriously hurt that he died yesterday; six so badly injured that death will probably ensue, and nearly two hundred more or less injared by | fractures, abrasions, &c., and a considerable number will be crippled for life. Our eae eee leon is really anxious for war, and though the | *¢ason, and are withdrawal of Leopold Spanish throne appears to have removed | the immediate excuse for hostilities it by no | means follows that peace is assured. On the contrary, the history of 3 that when he has really been disposed for war | be has never been at a loss for a pretext. The only restraining power upon him will be the influence of the other members of the European family of nations. If they make common cause against a war he will hardly undertake to pro- yoke a conflict, but it must be remembered that | all of these powers, with the possible exception of Great Britain, have some selfish considerations of theirown in the way of territorial alvantages to be gained that might cause them to be not averse to a general skrimmage in which they might reach their ends. Napoleon, of course, wants to secure the eov- eted left bank of the Rhine, and would be will- ing to pick up Cuba incidentally. Austria woald hepe to regain the territory lost in the late ten days’ conflict with Prussia. Victor Emanuel would seize the opportunity to make Kome the | / capital of I and Russia, in the pother, would certainly not omit such a chance of gob- bling up its “sick” neighbor, Turkey. And | should England get invoived in the contest, a favorable opportunity might be afforded for Uncle Sam to “diplomatize” bis Alabama claims to some advantage. Otherwise, thts country might reap some possible benetit from a general European war, but not enough for a | moment to cause us to look with anything else than horror at so needless and destructive ® con- thet for the sole benetit of aggressive dynasties. see ‘The Springtield Republican speculates on the probable result of the Congressional canvass in Massachusetts. It thinks Mr. Wilson will be re- elected to the Senate. Of the representatives, Messrs. Buffinton, Twichell, Butler, Banks, Brooks and Hoar are regarded as certain of re- | election. Mr. Ames should probably be placed im the same list, though the Republican thinks Le should retire becanse of his great railroad interests. Mr. Hooper is quite likely also to return, though he is not anxious about it. | Mr. Wasbbarn and Mr. Dawes do not desire a re-election, but the Republican thinks Mr. D.’s constituents will probably insist upon sending him to the House onve more. } = -2ee- = Tae Works Prorie.—The Bricklayers’ Union of San Francisco, having had some trouble with Mr. Stebbins, who ts superintend- ing the construction of the government build- ings in that city, have had a representative here daring the past week urging the removalof Mr. extended to all classes of workmen, and 20,009 are now idle.
