THE NOTARIES ¥URLIC OF THE DIATRICT. Mr. Merrick called up the question of the tenure of office of the notaries public of the District, and represented that the Clerk ot the Court refused to certify to their official charac- ter, he holding that under the act of April 8th, 1864, the term of their office had expired; and he asked if the Court would hear the question on @ special motion to direct the Clerk to certity to the official character sash officers, or would it be necessary to bring the question’ be- fore the Court on a petition for a mandamus? ‘The Chiet Justice remarked that the-Court would preter that the question should come up on mus, as it was a very important one, which the Court had already consulted on. : Mr. Merrick immediately prepared a petition for a mandamus, with a view to having the case immediately argued and decided.
