It is just as impossible to Sell what will benicar ve hie eutite tine to the practice of his cleanly pavement, adapted expecially for light vehicles. The ponderous rough paving stones used in commercial cities where there is heavy drayage, are entirely out of place in our streets. Bat the wood pavement is equally adapted for heavy or light work. In some of th¢ busines streets of Chicago, where rays carrying wads ot four br five tons are passing constantly, the Wood-pavement laid half a dozen years ago shows no perceptible marks of heavy usage. ‘There is no one thing that would be of so mach service to the city as a good system of pave- ments, sueh as would provide good drives, and put under the mud of winter and the dust of summer. And only wood-pavements will do this. Nosort of stone will answer, because in our wide streets the attrition from travel over them creates an amount of dustthat is in itself insupportable nuisance. The pavement we ‘sone that shall not only keep the original tonder, but that shall not ereate dust by and this desideratum the wood-pave- plies. ———~-ee-____ ‘To the list of States which have ratified the Fifteenth Amendment Alabama must now be adkied, both branches of the Legislature having yesterday given their assent to it by a large m ity. This makes the twenty-first State which has taken affirmative action on the amendment, and six more are still needed to in- corporate it into the Constitution. Iowa, Min- nesota. Vhie and Vermont, will Probably ratify, While the assent of Texas and Mississippi is a necessary precedent of their admission into the Union. There is no hope from Tennessee, as one branch of the Legislature yesterday refused to ratify. and the other branch will doubtless tollow im the same track to-day. sooo. Notwithstanding the unfavorable weather last night a very large audience assembled at the National Theatre, and the fine drama, “Trod- ‘len Down,” was performed with such spirit as to make the entertainment a very agreeable one for all who were present.
