VINE-GROWING ABOUT WASHING- TON. Those familar with vine-culture and wine- «Towing throughout the world have spoxen of the hills upon the rivers about Washington as peculiarly adapted by soil and drainage tor vineyards This is a matter of much interest to this District, now that we are casting abont to | see what elements we can bring into play ana what resources we can develop to give Wash. ington permanent foundations of business prosperity. We have noted the experiments in vine-culture made at Kendall Green, north of the city; om the Bills on the Maryland side; and on Rock Creek near Pierce's mull. Lately wa have heard rather glowing accouats of vine- yards planted upon the hills of the Virginia shore, between the Aqueduct and Little Fails, | Sud have taken the pains to visit them, to see | ow far report was correct. ‘These hilis, surmounting the southern bank of the Potomac above Georgetown, thouzh pic- turesque, and commanding View of the District cities and the Potomac, have, until quite recently, been left ™ 3 wild, updeveloped state. owing to the sufficulty of access to them through the want of a bridge over the Potomac at George- town. During the late war, in anticipa- tion that the time couid not be far dis. | tamt when the necessity for a road-bridge | at that point would lead to its construction. Mr. R. -A. Phillips purchased five hundred acres im this section im one body of land, con- sisting of five adjoming farms, and located | sbout one and a halt miles above the new road bridge at Georgetown, bordering about one | half mle im length and within about four nun- dred feet of the Potomac river, and ranning | back about one mile from theriver. Soon atter | the war Ar. Phillips moved his famtty out | trom Georgetown and occupied a house on this | estate, built several years before the war by George R. Herrick, and immediately com. menced making improvements, He found | ezteat numb rs of wild grape vines scattered over the entire tract, many of them of immense ~1z® and covering the largest trees wtth their luzuriant growth of foliage. Concluding from | ‘Ris fact that cultivatied varieties must do well, and knowing tast the grape is the most valuable fruit grown, he concluded to try the experiment of vine culture here on a pretty *horough and extensive scale. As a prelimi- nary siep, however, he had the soil carefully | examined by persons of experience in grape- | rowing. all of whom pronounced itadmirably | jualified by its constituents for the vine. | Among these was Mr Wm. Saunders of the | Government Experimental Garden, who | entered with Mr. Phillips into a proyect of | organizing a stock company with eapital stock “of $100,000 to plant a3 many acres as that amount would justify. Mr. Saunders was preven:- ed, however, by circumstances trom joining | tm the enterprise and Mr. Paillips determined to g0om alone and sccordingly the following “pring (186) planted, as an experimental test, | about two aeres in Lhe most thorough manner upon a favorably situated hill side, gave the | vines pretty good cultivation and they flour- hed, even beyond his anticipations. These vines were purchased im Pittsburgh: in | planting the vineyara it was found that the >ub-soi! was composed of decayed sand-stons, which is} romounced the most tavorable for the rape. The vines were tied for two years to stakes as they grew. and not allowed to bear. | The third year (1-65) the stakes were removed | and replaced by a trellis, like a high paling | feuce. Upom these trellises tna viaes were trsined upon the two-arm sys‘em. Tae saperd Top they bore that season created considerable | excitement for miles around, and many came | *o see the large, perfect and beautiful clusters ot grapes, the Concords b-ing especially fiae. ‘The success of the experiment sugzested the | dea among the vistors of organizing a “Fruit | Growers’ Associttion to aid in developing the | capabtl: of that district for fruit-growing. j From this germ sprang the Potomac Fruit | Growers’ Association, embracing s large num- oT of intelligent and enterprising citizens of Ab xindris and Fairfax counties. The montaly meetings of this association, which have beea «potted by the press, are having valuable ‘lect tm eliciting experiences and supply- ugd m regard to the most successfal modes of cultivating fruit. ‘This year the viaeyard of Mr. Phillips has | nad an immense yield, and tae grapes have sur- tore by the perfection of the clas. The people of Washington, however, are fvellar with cheir bewaty aud favor, as they L.ve Bad the command of the market. Mr. Puillips has added largely to the area of bis at thus far bas been able only to | jemand for tabie gripes; and the ae clusters, as well as their fa- ts them pre.eminently for this use, but | bere cum be Fo doubt that the experimert so ucces:iully commenced. must go ou to the ex- emsive cultivation of the vine on these hiils for wine growing purposes. Recently Mr. Phillips bas sold a portion of | his land to parties disposed to enter into the | fruit-growing enterprise, and it seems proba- | ble that the business of grape-growing will, | before long, be carried on upon this line of | hills upon a large scale. Among these purena- sers are the following: Dr. J.jW. Van Aer- mum, twemty acres; Gen. J. S. Crocker and Maurice L. Wright, tweaty-six acres; M.J. | Hopkins, ten acres, at $100 per acre, and Mesers. Dake aud Babcuck, twenty-six acres, | at $125 per acre, These gentlemen are rapidly | | | improviog their Jands, and the latter have al- ready erected a fine doable house, amd area oc- upying the same. We believe that something | of importance will grow from these experi- | meats iM gTape-growing in this vicinity. There *s BO good reason why the hills at Wash. | ington should not be as profitably caltivated | with the vine as those about incianati. The New York Republic m State Convention assembles to-day at Syracuse to nominate a Sate ticket:—Two Judges of the Court of Appeals, a Secretary of State, Comptroller, Attorney General, Treasurer, State Eagineer, Canal Commissioner, and State Prison In- spector; to be voted for at the election on the 2d of November. G. W. Curtis is spoken of tor Secretary of State, and General Franz Sigel tor Treasurer. The nomination of the latter is advocated by Greeley. Hon. Jobn A. Gris- wold will be the permanent President of the | Convention. The Episcopal Convention of the Diocese of New York meets to-day. The Evening Post | says It is understood that (he subject of the receut introduction of several ritualistic Watores at St. Alban’s will be brought to the notice of the Convention. The most remark- able part of this movement is the fact that the present compixint comes from the High Churebwen themselves. That serenade came off last might per Stan announcement-the STAR 1s always correct— and Mr. Boswell madea pretty good speech; Rot quite so interesting as some of his efforts, but still a very readable speech. But it is strange that he should get the fanny notion into bis head that Tam Srae is trying to heap infamy upon him. The trouble is with Boswell that he is given to exaggeration and is not very grateful. Tas Star bas been the making of Boswell: We | raised him from a Justice of the Peace to the | best paying office in the city—an $i3,0%) affair. Do show some gratitude, Bos- weil! —_—_______ The discovery of gold on the farm ot Rob- ert Davidson, im Montgomery coucty, Md., eleven miles above Georgetown, noticed in | Tue Star a few days since, has created some excitement in that neighborhood. Tae nugget | found @ week since, to which we referred, | Weighed nine ounces, and was valued at $150, It was discovered in a melon patch by a son of Mr. D.’s, who picked up a stone to throw at some intruding cows. Since that time Mr. Davidson has bad the place thoroughly pros. pected by a Californian, an expert in the business, who, after having collected earth iu the vicinity of where the nugget was found, . made several washings of the same, and found numerous pieces of virgin gold about the size of agrain of wheat. The farm of Mr. David- son, as well as the adjoining ones, are now being thoroughly prospected, with a view of fully and definitely ascertaining the mineral | ‘wealtn of the land in that ity. The resolutions offered in the Baltimore City | Council by the Investigating Committee. cen- suring the City Hall Building Committee ana Tequesting the latter to resign, were adopted yesterdsy by the First Branch. The enacting clause Was so amended as to make the resolu tons simply the act of the two branches of the City Council without the Mayor. The whole matter now goes to the Second Branch for its action. There were only two votes against the , principal resolution, that requesting the resig- nation of the Building Commutee, and the G2- tette of this morning says :—« The action of the | ty Council is so thoroughly in accord wi the feeling and judgment of this community, that we do not see how the Building Vommit- tee can do otherwise than yield to the demand thus formally expressed. | es | At a mass convention of colored citizens, held | in Cbicago on Monday, a resolution was | | adopted appointing two of their ablest citizens, | capable of creditably representing their in- terests, to attend the coming State Uonstita- tional Conventlen, and there, as opportumity may offer, by voice and petition beseech that necessities, and submit to the people of the ‘State such amendments to the State Constitn- tion as will remove the various disabilities under which they now labor.
