Geperally purchases are made in Juae and July for the winter supply. But this season has been different in consequence of combina- tions, strikes. &c., and the very high prices de- manded, dealers here and elsewhere have held off, aud the stock on hand is very light. Itis very obvious that the coal merchants are not to be blamed for this state of affairs. The odium | should rest where it properly belongs, upon the mimers and the carrying companies who transport the coal to market, and also upon the shippers who combine with these mouop- olies to Keep up the prices.
