He proposes to bring his case to the attention of the Government, and ask for some redress. GREAT INCREASE OF THE WHISKEY Tax.— From & tabular statement prepared at the In- ternal Revenue office, it appears that the quantity of whiskey upon which tax was paid during the fiscal year ending June 3v, 1868, was 6,709,546 gallons, while for the year ending June 30, 1869, it was 61,351,6¥0 gallons, ‘with thirty-seven districts yet to be heara from. This is indubitable evidence that the law is more faithtully executed now than it has been heretotore. THE Saninz Cananv.—Nothing has ye: been received atthe Navy Department from Oommander Walker. of the frigate Sabine. Telatiye to the reported mutiny on boara of that vessel. Tue Prorosivions YOR SETTLING THe Curan DiFFicuLtY.—“Da ta” says:—It is well understood that the propositions sooking to a settlement of the Gaban difficulty, which were prese to the government at Madrid through Mr. Paul S. Forbes, were rejected by tbe Spanish authorities. ‘The exact mature of the plan which Mr. Forbes was empowered to suggest to the regency bas been misstated in ai least one important particular. The United States did not undertake to guarantee the pay- ment of the sum in consideration of which the Spaniards were to relinquish to the Cubans the sovereignty of their island, bat offered to act as trustee of 4 fund for that purpose, to be raised by setting apart a portion of the customs rev- enue of the island. The correcpondence on the subject was communicated by the Spauish to the French Government, as is customary in the Spemee, of some European nations, in cases when friendly reiations and some ee of similarity of interests exist. Whether French infinencé had avy part in the described rejeo- tion of the overtures of the United States ts not known. Mr. Forbes is now on his way to this country, but it is thought in some quarters that ing will again return to Spain on asimilar errand. THE INTERNATIONAL Boat Race—Harvaris Not So Badly Beaten After All—It 1s clear now that, in the recent international boat race on the mver Thames, the Americans were not beaten 89 badly by their orpoarsis, the Oxford crew, as at first reported. The later cable dis. patch, published terday, stated that the judge bad dec! the Harvards at the end of the race were only half a length clear ‘water in the rear oftheir nents, indicating that they lost the race by al wre N ve goer a-halt. Now the special correspondent of the a ‘York Tribune confirms statement, and says: “The defeat of the Harvarde in the interna. tional bost race was less than reported. reckoned on the press boat it appeared four lengths, and I so telegrap! judge at Mortlake, Sir Aubrey Paul, person- ally informs me that the actual difference at the finish was y nograph, registering independent fifths of sec. ones.
