THE HIGH PRICE OF COAL. The exorbitant prices demanded of con sumers for coal this what the people ought to pay for this article of prime necessity—is still a eubject of dis- cussion in the newspapers. We have on sev- eral occasions recently referred to the matter. And Iaid before our readers various expres. sions of opinion as to the causes of tnis state | Of things, together with numerous suggestions &s to the proper remedy; but nothing conclu- sive has been established on any point except the fact upon which all are agreed, that the PTice of coal is too Digh, and that it mast come dows. Even in Philadelphia, on the verge Of the coal region, persons in humble circum- stances have, in the month of August, to pay the extravagant price of ten dollars a ton, Some tll us of the impossibility of getting coal any cheaper, because of the strikes of the workmen in the mines. Others again who pro- fess to be im the secret, declare that the fault lies not with that clsss of operatives, bat with the men wo are above them, and who own the coal. The New York Journal of Commerce in the article we quoted from yesterday, lays all the blame upon the strikers; denouncing them ss desperadoes, and threatening them with the military power of the country—all who a'e not shot to be hanged; and the Phite- delpbia injuirer gives figures intended to show ‘hat the miners alone are to blame, and are getting rich om the wages they receive. The majority of the journals, however. do not see it im this light, and the New York Herald pitches into the capitalists im this style “The price is from erght dollars fifty cents to eleven dollars a ton, according to the qual- Hy. tought not to be over four dollars.
