Daily Routine—How aud When People Drink. Eat, Dance and Stee; Testing Many Waters—The Fashie Drives—Mete} Life at Night—The sew Congress Hall—M Ete. SaRatoca Ssetnes, Jaly The daily routine of an idle! while possessing much samen able element, who do notbimg bat eat, dance and sleep, bas many attractions for those who are fond ot walking, riding, pic-nicing and tishing—in fact, forall whoseek health and rea! pleas rather than the snobby gentility and brilliant splendor of the great over-crowded hotels. However, the day's pleasures open for all alike. By 7a. m. all Saratoza, perma. nent and temporary, are awake, aud at that hour the crowd around the Congress Spring 18 so large that six boys, dipping at once tweu- ty glasses of this famed ra’harttc water, cannot supply the demand. By ~ o'clock the colon. nade around the Spring is *asier of approach, and all find themselves supplied. The profes. sional drinkers of the water first take two glasses and then move off in a brisk walk dog-trot throug ine Park. This is kept up tor ten or fitteen riinutes, when they return and take from one to three glasses more, ac- cording to the condition of the system, Aud then go to breaxfast. Those who prefer a milder cathartic, drink the Excelsior before breaufast or the High Rock, the er being a cathartic and diuretic before the morning meal, and a tonic during the day. The Excelsior Spring is abont a mile and a half trom ‘he town, but the company who own it supply cae hotels and boarding-houses gratuitously with large, well-filledcans. The strongest cathartic water is the new Hatborn Spring, discovered this season in digging for a foundation for th Congress Hail ball-room, I: appears to the old drinkers of the Congress to contain more chloride of sodium amd bicarbonate of mag- nesia, but the expression of thrsopiuion brings down on one’s bead & good deal of indignation trom the Congress Spring Company. 1* is but justice to say, however, that the stortes tha tbe Congress Spring is giving out, or that1 is “doctored,” are simply untrue. While the water bas not that strong chloride tagte that it possessed twenty years, or even five years £0, its effects on the sysiem are just as vigor- ons asever, Butall do not continuously drink the cathartic waters. Tho+e who sutter from seneral debility, liver, kidney and cutaueous disease, etc, fitst cieause te system wilt Congress water, aud then change to the tron and iodime or sulphur springs. It located at the seuth end of the town, the Columbian and Washington spri fare visb & strong imprezuation of irom—so strung that it deposits 4 rust oa the boards and glasses used uear them. If staying in the 1») E Saratoga, the maguitice Springs furnish the proper every day to the wonderful cures they tua Wrought, Scattered ‘hrough the town and be- tween the pomts named, are the Pavilion, Putnam, Hamilton, Seltzer, Ellis aud other springs, all possessing various miverai quali ties. The High Rock, Colambian, and Empire springs bubble and boul, while the sartace ot the others, save the Sulphur springs, are disturbed except by slight escapes of carboule acid gas. The Sulphar springs ai@ two miles from town; are only a year old, but ire prov. ing & great success. Fifty bath-Bouses nave been erected this season, aud sulphur water pd sulpbur batm can be liad su profusion. hibUs Hines connect these springs with th- town. Perbaps the location of these -ulphu springs best illus*rate the wondertul strata underlying this Saratoga valley. Not more than five rods trom whetea spring deposits the pure white sulphur, isthe handsome Eureka spring, which is composed of iron and magne. sia, and exactly opposite in taste and effect of the sulphur spring. All of the springs are Visited, more or less, from 4 2. m.to = p.m, and many visitors foolishly go from one to an- other tasting and drinking, sometimes trom a dozen different ones ma singleday. The effec: ys almost as bad as it you go intoa drug store and sip from the various bottles on the shelves, Breakiast over, the grand equipages of the fashionable roll up in front of the Congress, Union, and Clarendon Hotels, and trom 4 to 12 m. there is no end to the going and coming, no end to the styles of the carriag-s, to the horses that draw them, nor to the folly and turbelow of the people whooccapy them. Cane phaetons, with a huge white umbrella rising from a standard in the centre of the seat, are among the novelties in which young ladies drivearound. The ride to Saratoga lake over the various fine roads leading thither is the prinespal point for a drive. 1t is but five miles dietant, and has three good hotels, where trout breakfasts, lunches, etc. are served ap ‘with the famous cornucopias of tried potatoes A sai] in the yacthes on the lake, or in the li:tle steamer Silver Moon, or a rowiog ora fishing trip, or @ game at ten pins, or @ match in the shooting alleys, @ visit to tbe frog and trout ponds, and a view of the Green Mountains piled up in the etherial distance, are the pleas. ures before the return to Saratoga for dinner. The latter to the ladies is, however, the great event. The dining rooms of the priucipat hotels are trom two te three bundred fuer Jong, and are spacious enougn. therefore, for the exhibition of the most elaboray- toilettes. To-dsy nine bendred per. soms were atone time in the Congress Halli dining-room, seven hundred in the U.ion, and probably three hundred in tne Clarendon. The styles are duplicated at a dozen lesser houses. Dinner lasts from 2 to4p.m. The guests then adjourn tothe pizzas and corn. dors and spend an hour im listening to the music of the bands. The evening rides and ‘walks succeed the music till 5 p. m., when the hotels are agaia in a blaze of glory, every wo- man endeavoring to outshine her sister in looks and dress. Ues down, only to be broken by the merry tramp &t 6 in the morning of ihe Visitors to the Springs. Of course there are other a:tractions besides those mentioned. Hundreds visit the Indian encampment, which bas been bere for thirty years, and indulge 1m rides on the ciren- lar railway, or participate im the innumerabie games there offered, or go to the battle-ground, the Race-groands, the Archery bill, etc. The air is most always bright and cool and the drives and walke are charming and numerous. ‘The New Congress Hall, Congress Hall, erected & year or two since 0% the site of the old hotel burned in 1-65, is the largest watering-place Rotel, 1!, indeed, 3° 4s not the largest hotel im this country, 1 is built of pressed brick, is from five to seven stories in height, and surmounted bya Man. sard roof.
