THE GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICR—No INCREASE OF AVPRENTICES AS Y£T.—Colam- bia Typographical Union, No. Ivi,on Satur- day night last, it wiil be rememb:red, gave Mr. Clapp, Superintendent of Pablic Printing, the privilege of doubling the number of ap- prentices employed at the Government office and it is stated that be has been canvassing amorg bis two hundred and odd journeymen printers for some suitable person to take charge of such number of boys as may be em- ployed on probation, said instructor to decide after a reasonable time as to the qualific tions of the youths before they are considered as permanently employed. It is stated that of the large number of applicants for apprentices positions only one is colored, and he comes trom Howard Vaiversity, particularly well recommended. Mr. Clapp’s purpose, it ts said, is to employ but eight new apprentices at present, etch of whom will bave to pass a daore than usually rigid examination before they are even given x trial. All of the boys will be kept together in a remote part of the building, where they will be iustracted in the “art preservative” by the gentleman seleeted for that purpose alone. These apprentices are expected to enter on duty to-morrow.
