RAILROAD MexTiING IN GuORGRTOWN—Tie Proposed Conntction with the Loudon @nd Has y- shire Katiroad— Report of the Commitiee—Resolu- hows ond Speechcs.—A meeting of the citizens comprising inost of the prominent ousiness men of Georgetown was beld night, at new Market Hall, to hear and consider the report of the committee of citizens appointed some time since 10. xamine and re amend what action may jeemed neces-ary with regard to the roposition of the Aqueduct Railroad aad idge Company to counect tae city of George. town with the Alexandria, Loudon and Hamp. shire Rauroad viathe Aqueduct bridge. Mayor Sweeny was chosen to preside and Mr. © S esshaxks act as Secretary Mr. W. W. bungan, Secretary of the Alexan. dria Uanal Railroad ‘and Bridge Company, at the request of Mr. W.H. Tenuey, of the citi- zens’ committee, recapitulated the terms of the roposition which bad been submitt=d by him in behalf of the company. of which be ts Sec. retary, (which hss been already published in the Stax.) The Secre'ary of the meeting then read the Teport of the committee, sppointed at the last meeting, inywhbich they say they have sex amined the titleto the canal, aqueduct and the bridge and the piers supporting the same; also, the charter empowering the company to build 4 railroad from the southera terminus of the aqueduct t Alexandria on the perm: bank of the canal, with the richt to diverge therefrom and connect with other railroads, which will enable them to connect as they propose to do, with the Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire railroad, and the committee believe the: power ample for this purpose. The comm: have examined this route in company with Colonel Samo, United States engiurer. wh») bas given them the penefit of his experiene= Sud practical knowledge, and have come to the copelusion that the route near the head of Four Mile Kun is the easiest grade aud cheap- est ronte. It 1s to be observed that this point of connec. tiog is not more favorable than that offered several years since, and again receatiy by tie Alexandria, Loudou and Hampshire Ratiroad Company, which has been declined by those representing the town 2s not safficiently fayor- able to our interests. We certainly want, and itis of the utmost importance that we should have, a railroad connection, and all our en- deayors to this end for several years past have met with such obstacles that we have not been able to attain the object. The proposition now offered to our acceptance e great Advantage over any other we have ever con- sidered, that is, the use of the piers on which to lay the track of the road without any ad- Citional cost, and becoming partners with the company will bave a voice in its management, To build a separate and disticct road, with a crossing at any other point, would involve an additional ontlay of several hundred thousand dollars, which the people of the town would bot be likely to sanction. Another important advantage would be in an immediate com- Mencement and prosecution ef the work the moment the necessary tunds for tbe purpose are obtained, without waiting tor aay farther legislation on the part of Congress. be route examined by us leaves the berme bank of the canal and crosses the country near the toll gate of the Columoia turnpike and in- versects the Alexandria, Loudon and Hamp- shire rsilroad near the head of Four-mile run. The point of connection is about four miles from the southern terminus of the aqueduct, three miles from Alexandria and three miles from the Long Bridge. The advantages of this Toute is its comparative cheapness, owing to the nature of the country, and its giv: usa connection with two roads instead of one, which would be the case with either the Pimit Tun or Carlin Spring route. While your committee, with the people of Georgetown, have always favored a point of connection more distant from Alexandria, yet @n examination of the hill adjoining us and the survey of H W. Brewer, Esq., showing a grade of eighty feet to the mile, and heavy cut- ting on the summit, estimated by Colonel Samo to cost not less than $50,000, have led your com- mittee reluctantly to the conclusion that Carlin Spring route is beyond the means of the town, unless Washington would join us m the heavy additional cost. This road once made, and the Aqueduct made the point of crossing, the time will come when the Orange and Alexandria railroad and the Manassas Gap road will find it to their interest to make a direct road to the Aqueduct bridge. The Washington Branch railroad has altered ber route three times, and other roads having made frequent changes, leads us to the above conclusios. The great object of Georgetown should be to make the Aqueduct bridge the grand crossing for all railroads going South, and should the citizens and corporation avail themselves of this op- portunity before any other route is selected, it ‘would 11 all probability be the only route. The National Junction Felrond proposes to connect the Baltimore and Olio road and Potomac railroad, and such other roads as ma: come into Washington with the proposed road, the profit from which roads m crossing the Aqueduct bridge and the tolls on that bridge will make the stock @ paying stock. To con- ect at a point higher up the A. L. and H.R. R. than the one designated, even if the nature ot the country permitted, would confine the travel and trade to the A. Land HR. R. alone, as it is not to be supposed the Orange and Alexan- dria railroad would accept 3 route taking them several miles ont of their way to get to the Dis- trict. At present the trade in the Oran, Alexandr railroad would be more im) to us than that from the Loudon and _ shire road, But if this were not so the freight cn the last named road would come to us, as much of the grain now sent by that road seeks our market ut a heavy additional expense. Your committee, therefore, in consideration that tbe proposed route can be commencad at once, that at will give us a connection with vwo Toads, that tbe cost of making it is within the power of the corporation, by the exch: of its stock held by the commissioners of the sinking fuud, for the stock of the Alexandria, Loudoun Hampshire Railroad Company, ‘without adding any additional tax to the prop- erty of the town, recommend the p ton ot Messrs. Dungan & Co., to the favorable con- sideration of the corporation and citizens of Georgetown. It has been suggested to the committee by some of our busivess men and property-hold- ers, that it would be preferable in order to secure this desirable railroad connection that the credit of the town sbould be loaned to the company for such sum as may be necessary, ‘with the property mentioned in this communi: cation as secarity for its payment; but as this lan Was not submitted to the committee they Rave not had it under consideratioy {Signed|—Evan Lyons, A. H. Herr, M. H. Tenney, Jobn T. Mitchell.” Mr. Ww H. Tenney called attention to the fact that the report had not been signed by 8ll the members of the committee, and desired to hear the reasons which had influenced Mr. John Marbury, Jr., in withholding his sig- natore therefrom. Mr. Marbury expressed bimself in tavor of the project, but not of the copartnership, and boped that no one would think he was op- posed to the scheme. He was willing to re- commend that the credit of the town should be loaned for the object mentioned. Mr. Ramsburg offered a series of resolutions «that the growth and prosperity of our city will be greatly promoted by the =peedy con- struction of a railroad across the piers of the Alexandria aqueduct to unite with the rail- road system of Virginia; that owing to the limited means at our command it is essertial Ubat the cheapest and most direct reute of connection be chosen: that the proj con- nection at the Four Mile run, while it pre- sents the enly route within the ability of our town vi to complete, will, in the judg- ment of this meeting, by bringing us into di- rect union with the railroad centering at Alexandria, afford greater facilities for trade tan any oiber route bavi for its ob- ject simply a connection with the Aler- Poadon and, Hempenire ‘ralirosd; the citt. zens of the town 4 like Cee) of money, meets with our hearty approval; this apponte comuilttes of three to solicit Pry r 100,000; one-half of Toad is semmation ax to pedient; and that a copy of these resolutions be forwarded to bon, branches of the Oity Councils prior to their next meeting.’ Mr. Jobn T.
