TseGax Hitt Cemetery [svestication.— The unfortunate differences im regard to th: management of that beautiful “ity of tae Dead,” on Georgetown Heights, known as Oak Hil Cemetery, bas engeuaered a great deal of feeling in this community, but we yet ‘rest that the difficulties may be adjusted to the satis. faction Of all concerned. At a meeting of the lot-Boiders on the isthof February last a com. | muittee of three, consisting of Messrs. JohaC. Harkness, Wm. A. King, ana J. D. Kartz, | were appointed to investigate the affairs of the company from its organization to the present time, and to examine imto anything affecting | the interests of the lot-holders as to the amount | of receipts to be accounted for, and how the ac- count has beem made; what dues have been paid and what remain unpaid; how the funds Rave been invested, and what investments are in band; what were and is the manuer of keep- ing the accounts, and what system of acconat- ability, if amy, has been established; what were the sources of income, and what have been the expenditures, and what change or re- form im the management, if any, is needed. The committee were also empowered to exam- ine all charges of dereliction of duty against any of the officers of the compaay, or intorma- UOR regarding its management or mismanage- ment. At the meeting of the lotholders, held in Market Hall, Georgetown, last eveni this investigating committee submitted s partial report, which is too voluminous for publica- | tion im full im the Stan, owing to the press- | ure om eur columns at tis time; bat as a | matter of general interest, we will state the Purport of it. It sets out with an eulogy of | Mr. W. W. Uorcoran for his liberal donations of land and money to establish the cemetery, which he projected: and then reviews the management, saying the affairs of the company | trom its incipiemey were not conducted in as | systematic & manner as they might have been; but that the blame for this chiefly rests upon the former managers, the present ones having inaugurated many reforms, and endeavored to correct abuses which formerly existed. ‘The Superintendent of the Cemetery, Mr. Blor- ain, is entirely exonerated from all the charges | of misappropriation of funds, &c., which were brought against him. The report is accompa- nied with a large mass of evidence, &c., among which are twenty-three several charges pre- ferred by Mr. Corcoran against the manage- ment and Superintendent. Many of these | charges (amd we say it with all due respect for M:. Corcoran, whose ‘ificence we have re- Ppeatedly spoken of in these columns in the terms of praise which it deserved,) are, to say the jeast, frivolous and uncharitable, and seem rather to have resulted from pique and per- sonal feeling against individaais, (han from the better impulses which usually govern Mr. C. in bis intercourse with his fellow men. He may have been provoked into hostility by the opposi- thon of certain persons te fully carrying eut his wishes in regard to affairs at the Vemetery: and tor this, proper allowance should be made in )udging bis course in this mat ter, which is not such as many of bis friends would have de- sired The result of the investigation is not more gratifying to the Superintendent. than to Mr. George W. Beall and Capt. W. P. Sanger, of the management, whose many friends in this city and Georgetown are well pleased. Those gentlemen, however, have so long had the esteem and confidence of the community in both cities that nothing was needed for their | defence or justification. The Liberals in Cuba are not without oc- asional and substantial successes im spite of the reports te the contrary given out by the author- ivy of the Captain General. Private and reli- able advices have been received at New York, which corroborate the late reports said to have been officially received from Cespedes. The informant of the Tribune was an eye-witness | of the tour engagements fought by the Cubans | under Quesada between Nuevitas and Puerto Principe, and vouches that their victories wera not suppositions or trifling. Im these hot con- tests the Cubans were generally the winners. Lesea was deteated at Las Tunas: and at Siba- na Nueva the Spaniards were routed. The same paper has another report, which it con. Siders truthful. to the effect that of the eigh’ bundred men under Lesca, when attacked in front and rear on the ground from San Miguel de Nuevitas by the Caban guerillerus, halt | ‘were lost. A turning point im the contest appears to have been reached: and many of those who have give the matter cool and impartial attention now entertain the belief that with a little time- ly aud im the way of war materval and recruits, the Cubans will be able to throw off the Spanish yoke. In the meantime, where are the vessels which were said 10 have lett New York for | Cuba a couple of weeks ago, so heavily laden | ‘with men and munitions! Isn't {t about time tor the expedition—if there really was one—to be bearing fruits? Py Tauddle in the Pennsylvania coal mi- ‘Bg Tegion Sssumed a new and ugly phase on 2 Monday jast, if the reports telegraphed themes are to be believed. The last sensation ‘was the posting of an anonymous notice at one of the mines thresicning death to any mi- | mer who descended the shafts [9 work; and it is s@id that a wild and most untecsonable panic At once spread among the workmen, in consequence of which the men in all but four of the mimes refused to go to work. Waat the result will be it is of course difficult tu foretell, but it looks very much as though the capitalists, who wish to stop the supply of coal, would be able to carry their point, euher by actually operatirg om the fears of the men or by making other terms with them, aud inducing them to assign personal dan- ger as the reason for not working. There seems to be good ground, too, for the Iatter Dypothesis, as it is safe to assume that if the miners really wanted to work they would not be Kept from it for many days by threats of aseassination. They are too formidable as a body to be serionsly intimidated by such a bogbear Chicago, up to the times in liberality and ‘erprise in a general way, yet plays sharp oc- carionally in small things. For instance, she expects ber Mayors to have their portraits painted ‘or the city council chambers, and to pay for them out of their own salary. As their pay is small, and as the cost of a good picture ranges from one thousand to fifteen ndred dollars, & cBange in the custom is urged by (Dore interested and by the more liberal jour- nals of the city. They sensinty bold that if {Re portraits are worth anything to :hecity, for any purpose, they should be paid for by th, corporauon, evem to the extent of refanding tbe amoun's heretofore paid for that purpose by gentlemen who have filled the office. Albeit the Republican City Nominating Con vention meets this afternoom, our readers should not pass by the proceedings of the sey eral ward meetings Beld iast evening for the Purpose of selecting delegates thereto.
