May 27.—At Wo’clock last night che party of William Garroll. of this city, who Was to tight Abe Hicken. ot Philadelpnts, to- day, proceeded to the Calvert Station of the Northern Ceutral Railroad, and purchased tickets for Parkton. When the train started at 10:45, it Was discovered that the famous Mason & Dixon's line was the point selected for the fight. The ring was pitched on the crest of a high hill in Pennsylvania, near the Maryland lin», nd on or near the celebrated SbrewsberyCamp Meeting ground, about torty miles north of Baltimore. Carroll entered the rirg amidst reat cheering. immediately followed by icken. who was also cheered. After tossing: for corners, which Carroll wou, ‘he men were yaced in iheir respective cor Jo ‘hompson was elected umpire for Carroli,and George Roberts umpire for Hicken; Thomas Robertson as referee. After shaking Bands, and considerable spar- ring Carroll rushed upon him. and, with one olow, knocked him clear off his feet, amidst the wildest excitement. Second Round.—After a great deal of spar- ring, Carroll doing most of the fighting, Hicken got a lignt one on the ribs. Carroll finally made @ Tush and knocked him against the #, punishing him severely. ‘nird Round.—Hicken complained that Car- roll bad rosin on his hands; bat he was treated ‘with derision, as the crowd were in the interest of Uarroll. The fighting was in Oarroil’s cor- ner. Hicken got one on Carroll’s eye. Afver some sparring and fibbing both went down; Hicken on top. Fourth Round.—Both smiling; Hicken look- ing well; Carroll fine as a new pin. After sparring, Hicken got @ good blow on the breast, oll countering on the ribs. The fighting was in Carroll's corner, and several slight when the blows were exchanged, —_ ended by an attempt on the part of Hicken to gouge the eye of Carroll. ‘The friends of Car. roll clamored foul, and the excited crowds Fanged across the ring and pistols were drawn, while the second of Hicken threw up the — and was knocked down for his pains. Revolvers were drawn, and the other second of Hicken received a terrible cut in the head and a blow in the ribs. Hicken thea made a run, followed by sey- eril pistol shots. The referee decided that as White had thrown up the sponge the fight be. longed to Carroll. Hicken could under no circumstances win, and he and fought under ihis disadvantage. Thus ends this disgraceful scene, after al- most an hour's duration. NEW ORLEANS COMMERCIAL CON- VENTION. Naw Ortgans, May 26.—In the Commercial Convention ‘Western Trade submitced a resolution favoring the encouragement of iron bridges for the trans- portation of ireight on the Western rivers. The Committee on the Removal of Ubstruc- tions at the Mouth of the iieipol River Tecommended the appointment of a Committee to prepare a memorial to ting the material importance of the objects re- ferred to, and asking that tiom to the matter. It is also recommended that the Committee be directed to apply, withe out delay to the President and:to the United States jineer Bureau to have a portion of the Geueral Appropriation for River Improve- mente devoted to the speedy proseeution of the work alresdy commenced at the mouth of the Mississipp). The Uommittee on Levees submitted a com- munication endorsing and recommending the passage of the bill introdnced in Congress at the last session providing for the extension ot national aid to the construction of levees. ‘The Committee on the Pacific Railroad pre- sented a majority and a minority report; the tormer favoring the direct route Cairo to Mazatlan, and the latter favoring the Memphis and El Paso grand trunk route with branches to various important points in the South. In presenting the minority report, Mr. Williams, of Tennessee, made a brief speech advocating the Memphis El Paso route as being wholly within the territory ot = Lone and posing any route touching territory. ae remarks were received with considerable applause.
