E. Borie, Secretary of the Navy. CcpaN AFPAIRS—ADMIRAL HOFF Svus- TAINED.—The published statements that the Administration was dissatisfied with Rear Ad- miral Hoff, commanding the North Atlantic squadron, on account of bisaction towards the Spanish authorities and Cuban insurgents, are entirely without any foundation, as his course thus far has been entirely satisfactory, and Vice Admiral Porter announces that Ris action so far will be sustained by the Department. A DISPUTED AccoUNnT.—A bill contracted by Secretary Seward in telegraphing over the ca- bie to Reverdy Johnson has been presented to Secretary Fish by the agent of the Telegraph Company for payment. it consists of a single item and amounts to #40,0W). Mr. Seward, it seems, was to be allowed cheap rates on his Messages, and when this bill came in he refased to pay it. It therefore fell to the succeeding Administration, Secretary Fish declined to pay it, amd when it was presented to President Grant he sent it to Attorney General Hoar for an opinion, which he is now engaged on. A Goop Scccgstion.—The Committee of Clerks appointed by the Secretary of the Treas- ury to examine into the affairs of the printing division of that Department, and which is charged with the duty of ascertain! the most practicable means of defeating the skill and mgenuity of counterfeiters, has decided on a method of preventing the alteration of the numbers on bonds and notes. The addition of one or more figures either betore or after the original ber is @ common and easy mode of destroying the identity of the note or bond It is proposed to print on that part of the bond where the number is placed a number of bine parallel to be enclosed in brackets, and the whcle figure is to be just large enough to admit the number. Mrs. DR. Waxes, the charming bloomer, Was at the State Department for some hours thie morning waiting to get am interview with the Secretary of State. It was mot known what was her errand there, but the supposition ‘was that baving failed in getting & placeinany of the Departments, she was seeking fora post in the Diplomatic service. It will be remem. bered that a prominent Female Rights-er made & strong effort a year of two to get the claims of the women to representation in the foreiza service recognized; and thatshe was endorsed by Senator Wade for a foreign mission. The Senator afterwards, however, rather ungal. jantly backed down from being held responsi- ble for an unqualified endorsement of the ap- . He said me only endorsed her ap- plication for any foreign appointment she was “qualified to fill.” Perhaps this half-way rec- commendatien caused the failare of the appli- cation. Atany rate she did not get the mission. Mrs. Dr. Walker is pretty persevering and per- bsps she will be more successful. Wa. Seward will take a trip across the contument, starting m the early partof Jane. Foing over the Pacific railroad co San Francis co. From thence they will go to Alaska by thatabsolutemonarch of the Stage, David Gar. | “Amer, and Afier spending some time there Tek: (o the time when Saran Siddons, an ac- tress of some provincial reputation, first ap- peared at Drury Lane, playing Laly tn Garrick’s Ré-hard thy (hard. On that occas: the lovely woman, later of such majestic pro. portions, and firm health, was slight, pale trom recent illness, and, according to Miss Burney, oppressed with stage-fright. The re- sult, if not a failure, was so iar from a brilliant success, that the ambitious young actress re- tired, disheartened, from tae London stage, and continued to play in the Provinces for some six years longer. Then she re-appeared at Drury Lane, and achieved her first great tri- ups. All after was glory and success. ‘ben im London, some fit ears since, I s:tw, at the house of Mr. Charles Kemble, a flee portrait of Mrs, Siddons, taken, 1 think, in her thirtietb year. This is the picture of a more slight ard delicate woman than appears in the stately portraits of Sir Josaua Reynolds and Sir Thomas Lawrence; but Mr. Kemble as- sured me thatit wasan admirable likeness. To this picture Mrs. Scott Siddons bears a re- markable resemblance. To any one who has seen this picture, or much ef the Kemble fam- ily, there were scarcely need of other proofs of direct and near relationship. Mrs Scott Siddo. Y gularly like the late Mrs. Combe, the dau, T of the great Mrs. Siddons, whom 1 visited in Edinburgh, and who greatly resembled the portraits of her mother. As anactress, this latest child of an illustrious line, bas evident scarcely approached her prime. She is yet but a beautiful promise of what she may be with careful study and patient practice. The mantle of her great- grandmother ts too large for her as yet. It will Siways be too heavy for her. It rather en- cumoers than adorns her. The strange re- sembiance in feature te one only now remem- bered in the fullness of her power and majestic beauty, makes us perhaps, too exacting, and takes somewhat from the young Artist's own fredom and ease. But there is much, aside from her rare, spirited, Kemble beauty, im Mrs. Scott Siddons to interest and please. ben she is most simple and natural, and least Kemble- most charming. Grace GREENWwoop.
