He will bring bat one or two members of bis staft with him. IT 18 Now pretty generally understood that Mr. Colfax will tender bis resgration as Speaker of the House immediately after the & of the journal on Wednesday, third of March. It will certainly be ne: for bim to resign at some moment before 120’clock on that day, asat that hour he must call the ‘Senate to order, and at the same time some one must be in the chair in the House to adjourn the Fortieth Congress. He will, therefore, not wait until the Iast day, but will resign two or three days beforehand, and a Speaker pro tem. will be elected, and the indications are that Mr. Pomeroy, of New York, will be selected. He ts not re-elected to the Forty-First Congress and therefore he will stand the best chance. Tue Tax BILL, which passed the House Tuesday evening. repeals the provision allow. ing railroad and ferry companies to charge an additional cent fare to cover the Government tax of one-sixieenth of a cent upon each pas. senger. Should the Senate pass the bill in this shape, the railroad companies and ferry com- panies will be obliped to throw off the cent aaditional. For instance, the charter of the Washington and Street Railway Company fixes the tare at five cents, but under this provision have for some years charged six cents. Should they be required togo back to five cents the public will be the gainers, but it will be pretty hard on the company, who, with the present bigh prices for horse-feed and every article of use on the road, flad it rather difficult to make both ends meetat six cents fare, If 18 STATED, on what is represented to be good autbority, that President Johnson intends, shortly after he goes out of office, to make a visit to Europe.
