The Corporation most have authority from Congress to vote the money, and the sooner it asks for that authority the better. It is idle to say let the capitalists subscribe. Very few railroads, except through limes, are built by the subscriptions of monsed | men are large snd immediate; and branch roads, while of great benefit to the country traversed, and to the business of the terminii, do not as general thing pay large dividends to the stockholders, This railroad is one that will bring set of customers exclu- sively toour business men. It will cheapen the cost of living by bringing here exclusively the products of lower Maryland. It is thus of great importance to our commanity as a whole, and should be subseribed to by the corpora- tion for the benefit of the entire community- lt a8 argued that it will require consider- able money, that the corporation is im debt, Ac. Very well, this is just the way to bring money here. self for the time being, im building the rail- Toads centering im that city, but she is now reaping the benefits of her expenditures. In the New England States, where they are build- ing net works of railway communicating with square mile of territory, the tedious and upeertain process of depending upon individual subscTiptions las been pretiy much sbandoned. The townships and corporations take hold of the work in a systemmatic way. In Maine, for instance, where a gridiron system of rail- roads is being spread over the whole State, the work is carried through mainly by the town- sbipe. whicd issue bonds to build the roads. Now let the Corporation of Washington show & similar apprecistion of the advantages of railroads. The men who take hold of this work and push it through will be reckoned Lereafter among the benetactors of the city. ‘We hear that some of the New York stock- bolders of the Washington and Georgetown Street Railway Company are bere lobbying to intivence the New Yor members and others to oppose the passage ef the bill paving Penn- sylvania avenue, because the bill requires the company to pave its track. This strikes us as s very reprehensible proceeding. The F-street lime paved its track at very heavy expense, without grambling, when that street was paved. and there is no earthly reason why the Averue line should not be required to pave its track, just as street railways everywhere are required todo. It 18 bad enough to have the wm fluence of northern stockholders in the mo- nepoly hne of railroads leading here brough: to bear upom Congress to prevent us from hav- fog more railrads; but that northern stock- holders in our street railways should under- take to defeat much needed city improvements, lest their dividends should not be quite so large, is simply inwlerable, Fosstiirerovs.—io jhe Congressmen of Maryland really represent the people of that State im opposing more railroads! Hon. Fred- etiek Stone, Representative trom the Fitth Dis- trict, it seems, bas written to Gov. Bowie that if the sur-line railroad bill passes Congress it ought to be resisted in the Supreme Court ‘This is progress with a vengeance! We cin epderstand why the Baltimore and Ubio Kail. Onward they pressed, presenting little variety. excepting national Hage were ted to borses’ tails, and trailed through the streets as a warning to Unronists of what mightoccur thereafter. My little daughter, who had been enjoying her jet secretly. at this moment came to the door, attracted by this blasphemous salute, and, takong it from her band, 1 held it firmly in my own, but not a word was spoken. Soon a bright spot in this motley mass was visible. A splendid carriage. accompanied by ¢legsntly mounted officers, evidently the flower of the army, was approaching. As they came near the house they caught the glimpse of the tiny flag, and exclaimed, “See! see! the flag, the Stars and Stripes!” ‘and, with trae chiy- alry, bats were removed and courtesies were offered the brarer, but not ber standard. They bad advanced some paces when a halt was ordered, and soon a lady—tien Miss Martha Sine, sive Mrs. James Arnold—ot Frederick, stamding pear with other ladies of the neighbor- hood, admonished me to fly with my colors. 1 did not fly, however, nor move, until an officer from the shove-named company rode up, and directing bis attention to me, I stepped’ for- ward, and the following remarks were ex- changed Officer.—Madam. give m- your flaz. Susini and Reina were geod as usual. ‘The company are encouraged by their success to offer another eatertainment on Sa/urday evening next, when the performance will con- sist of the first act of the “Barber ef Seville,” the second act of “Martha,” and the comic @ from the “Crispinoe Ia Comare.” Seats may be secured at Metzerot And now come the young men in their teens for the ballot! There is a suffrage movement on foot im Massachusetts to place the ballot in the bards of young men between the ages of eigbteen and twenty-one.
