FALSE PRIDE. Undoubtedly one of the great draw-backs to the prosperity of the South in the past has been | the false-pride which looked upon labor, work | ‘with the hands, as something disgracefal and | humilaing. Better ideas in this respect have taken root there of late years with healthful results, but occzsionally an exhibition of the | old feeling crops out. There is a curious | illustration of this ina “Political Pamphlet” | issued by E. A. Pollard, in which he abuses Jefferson Davis without stint because the | latter, according to report, is about to enter as partner im a commercial house in Liverpool. Mr. Pollard seems to thin that there is degradation in trade as well as in hard iabor. He accuses Mr. Davis with hav. ang “bargeimed his historical heroism for certain benefits of trade,” and thinks “it is almost impossible to credit such prostitution of historical Cignity.” This, Mr. Pollards urges, 45 & most conclusive illustration of the “little. ness and meanness to which the Confederate Chief has sunk.” That the Confederate leader should soil his hands with trade horrifies Mr. Pollard to the last degree. “Better,” exclaims BL. P., “for Mr. Davis’ fame if he had died in the romantic martyrdom of Fortress Monroe!” «He bas been released from prison only to ex. hibit the dregs of a character essentially selfish and mean.” Jefferson Davis earning his bread by the sweat of his brow, or inking his fingers 4m commercial pursuits! The more Mr. Pol- lard thinks about the less he likes i, And again he pitches in. Says Mr. Pollard, «The former ruler of the Southern Confederacy and the prevent commussien merchant of Liverpool has made himself the ruin of bis country and the scandal of his age ‘This ts harsh language, but Mr. Pollard has yet bitterer words in store, and proceeds to ejaculate -—“Shame upon the man, a blistering mark upon the caitiff, curses upon the wretch who has done this paltry and flagitious thing! Now, this seems certainly a very superfine idea of honor and respectability. According to Br. Pollard’s notion it would have been more to the credit of Jefferson Davis to tollow a life of idleness, dependent upon charity, or the “offerings” of the public, as in the case of the dignified Mr. Dorritt, for bread for himself and family, rather than seek an uonest liveli- ood by hisown labors. It will strike all sen- sible people, even those who sympathize with the “lost cause,” that Mr. Davis is doing a com- mendable thing in determining to rely upon his own exertions for a livelihood. Indeed, the most commendable feature in the history of many of the Confederate Generals was the manly g0od sense shown by them at the end ot the war in seeking any honest business pursuit for a livelinood within their reach. They pat on no fine airs of being entitled to be drones in society. Gen- eral Lee entered at once upon the duties of pedagogue, dull and uncongenial indeed in contrast with his brilliant military career- Another distinguished Confederate General ik the management of an Express Company. Others entered upon pursuits still more m con- trast with their Ite avocation of arms. They deserved and received commendation for turn- ang their backs upon the dead past and accom- modating themselves to the altered condition of affairs with cheerful philosopny. They Went lo work at whatever their nands found to do. This is the true American idea, and the men of the Pollard school must come to accept i ——— THE VERMONT ELECTION. The election in Vermont ‘yesterday results in decided Republicams gains. The Democra:s had made no special contest in the State, and naturally expected it would go Republican by & considerable majority; but they undoubtedly hoped that the result would show something of that “ground-swell” throughout the coun- try counted upon to help them to victory in November. In this way, the returns showing @ large vote and heavy Republican gains, is a disappointment to them, and affords cor- Tesponding cause for elation to their opponents. ‘The effect will undoubtedly be to give great en- couragement to the Republicans throughout the country; and possibly it may do them dam. age, by inspirmg an over confidence of a similar easy Victory everywhere. In Ver- mont the Republicans had the vantage ground In all essential particulars. The ficnt Will be on a very different footing In the Cen- ‘ral and Western States. Negro equality, high prices, greenback-theories, dull business, &c., &e., Were matters that did not affect the Vermont farmers. Yet the pening gun from Vermont is a decidedly discouraging one for the Democrats. There is no “dritt” in their debalf im that quarter, They hope to do better am Maine, however, on the Mtb. They think that the people of the Pine Tree State, dissatis- fied by the prostrauon of their shipping busi- ness and other interests, are ripe for a change. Will this Democratic expectation be realized! We bave seen a letter to-day from Apromment Republican politician of Maine, in which he says that the Democrats have spent money like water there, and bave made con- cede@ly the most effective canvass ever made by that party im the State: out he estimates trom what be claims to be thoroughly reliable data that the Republican majority on the lth will not be less than 30,000, If he should prove to be mght tbe Democrats canmot couat upon New Engiand to start the ground-swell. They must wait to see what the October elections ‘Will show for them in Pennsylvania and else- where Gaand Masovic Exccrsion.—There seems to be great preparations on foot all over the copntry among the Masonie fraternity toattend ‘he approaching triennial meetings of the grand bodies of the Order, at St. Louis, commencing ou the isth of this month. The various rail- road companies through the country issue halt fare tickets for the occasion, and we unde: stamd that a number of full Commanderies of Kuights Templar are making preparations to go. Arrangements have been made tor the delegates and, visitors from tie Southern States, Maryland snd the District of Columbia, to meet ‘herr brethren of the Order from the Eastern and Biddle States at Pitsburg on the morning of the futh, where a spectal traia is to be pro- vided for their accommodation, with sleeping cars, &c. It a5 also arranged to bave their brethren of Obto meet them at Crestline. It is proposed to give the members of the Order dur- tpg the trip a bird's eye view ot the magnifi- cent scenery Along the great Pacitic railroad tree of cost. The Soldiers and Sailors’ National Executive Committee, at a meeting heid in New York yesterday, resolved to call a grand monster mass convention of soldiers, to be held at Phila, delphia ou the ist and 2d of October. Phila. delphia was selected for the demonstration in compliment to the hospitality extended by her citins to sokifers during the war. The Boys in Blue and other Republican organiza- tions are invited to participate. Muss Ciera Louma Kellogg writes by the just steamer that she expects to bein New York by the middle of Septemper. SaRaTOGa Sretyes, Aag. 3).—It is a good thing to be in at the death of the season—tne largest and grandest known for ten years, It is something of 8 sight to see the trains go off heavily laden with those who are seeking @ home for the rest of the weary, after weeks of complacency in being perched on a roost in the seventh story of Congress Hall, two miles and a half from the office, looking ont across the lawns and grounds radiant with belles and beaux in the sparking air of the coming Sep- tember morning. It is good for man to be here. but itis better for him to go away. 1 peak collectively. I mean the family man— him with the marriageable danghters and the dressy wife, 1t has been a season of sad expe- Tience for him. The single man has uot been here. It bas cost too much, said old Uilla- pod, from Vensngo, to “me yesterday. The youmg men can't stand the ex- pense and risk the chances—though the chances are good and the expenses are numer- ous. It is the story everywhere this season, No beaux! no beaux! Itis heard at Newport, at Ricnfield, Sharon, on the Lakes, and wafted from on the beac Long Branch. Gred- grind was the man that Dickens knew who wanted facts in “Hard Times.” He ought to be here togeta few from the bard times the girls are having. Sid Araminta yesterday, in my hearing, “1 have been here four seasons, and it is the poorest market this year for beaux thatever 1 baveseen. Would you believe i,” sasd she, witha toss of her false Marie Avtoinette curl, and a significant twitch of her pug nose, “I have not had but one wali through the pine grove to the Excelsior, in the moonlight; and then there was no sighing among the pines of an old song with new giad- ness jor me.” How sad and touching! I was about to advise her to go. down tothe Treasury Depsrtment in Washington, but felt glad that I did not know her, so 1 said nothing. ‘The Grecian bend is here in all its glory. The grand portucoes of Congress Hall and the Union are excellent promenades for its dis- play. Some are modest and seemingly grace. ful, while others, with an excessive /’anier, Jook as though they had been drinking too much at the Springs, and had mixed tae wa- ters. Saxe bit it when he said tnat this Gre. cian bend was nothing but the colic stoop, and every body wonders why the dear things don't take peppermint lozenges and stand erect again. They will then be things ot beauty once more, even if they are not joys forever. Bur, seriously, one is forced to think that the young ladies are playing a desperate game of “Buter-Sweet.” It is all very well to talk of the fashions and follies of life—though the terms are synonymous. If the fashions at these watering places do not comprise all the follies, there can be but litle left; aud jast so lon, the young Iadies who throng here tri- umpb over themselves ix. the luxuriance and extravagance of dress, justso Tong will they irighten the young men and contumue to remain single. Veniias Vanitatum. Une of the great features of this Saratoga season is the new Congress Hail Hotel. It isa mammoth atfair—indeed, the largest hotel on the continent—seven stories in heighth, with a mansard roofand magnificent colonnaded pi- azzas running on all sides. The parlors, «dining rooms, bails, corridors, offices, and even the bed-rooms, are spacious «nd aury. There is not a small room in the honse, nor one without the latest improvements. The spacious porti- coes and offices are always filled with prome- naders. The ladies throng the hotel offic telegraph office, etc., the same as the gent men, giving the place an aur of delightful ease and comfort without restraint. The buildiag cost nearly & miilion of dollars, and the profits this season are S120). The distances are so reat in the hotel that railways will be intro- duced next season to convey guests to the va. rious parts of the house. It is owned by a stock company, and among the proprietors is Mr. Breslin, who was formerly clerk at Wil- lard’s. Among the notables here is the ex-Confeder- ate General J. B. Magrader. He delivered an interesting lecture a night or twosince in the Union Hotel ball room on Maximilian, in whore service be was for sixteen mouths. He had a large and brilliant audience and the lec. ture was full of interest. Me declared that it was Napoleon’s desire to encourage the Uon- federate cause and to break up the Union if possible; and the invasion of Mexico was made to accomplish those ends, and at the same time gAin & foothold on this continent. Maximilian, be saad, on the contrary, favored the Union and sympathized with the North, and hoped by ob- taining recognition of the North to introduce American ideas and enterprise into Mexico to develope its resources. Grau’s German Opera with Frederica \as Prima Donna, closed an engagement last night at Leland’s (pera House, with Der Freischutz. Martha was pertormed on Friday evening, aad well performed, too, the crowded and splen- didly dressed house applauding to the echo. Last night the company was not strong enough for Der Freschutz, but 1t passed off fatrly. ‘The continued discovery of mineral springs here has given new life even to Saratoga. ‘The village has now over ten thousand perma- nent residents the year round. Property is very higb, and capital is still seeking invest- ment. A company trom New York bas just paid $4,000 for the old Pavillion Spring and the one acre of ground in which ft is situsted- The High-rock Spring is handsomely inclosed and the water boils over and effervesces {com the rock im @ sparkling manner. Near the High Rocka genuine Seltzer Spring has been discovered and is doing a good business. There are now fourteen springs flowing, all hand- somely inclosed, and owned by stock compa- nies, each spring possessing different mineral Properties. The new White Sulphur isa great success. A grand ball was given avthe nion on Fri- dayevening. About 4 thousand guests attend- ed, and the toilettes simply vied with each other in beauty and richness, Last night the ebildren of Congress Hall bad a grand hop. It ‘was a tary sight to the hundreds who looked on. The belle of the ball room was just seven, and a fisxen blonde. There are but few Washingtonians here. Rev.
