POLITICAL CIPHERING. An article in the New York Jnd-penient by Horace Greeley, upon the coming Presidential | election, creates some fluttering among the pol- | iticiags, the Democrats drawing no little | comfort from it as an admission of Republican | ‘weakness by one who knows: and the Repub- fieans being much deposed to censure the ‘vaticmnations of Mr. Greeley as unnecessarily, | and biliously bive. It would seem, however, | that Mr. Greeley is merely indulging his usual pisin talk" to voters, such 2s he has used Prior to every election of importance for years. | Simce the memorable defeat of Heary Clay through the over-confidence of Ris adherents, Mr. Greeley never fails to warn his party to deal im work rather than in talk. In the Jndependen: atticle—headed “The Perils of the Hour,"—Mr. Greeley holds that a de- cided majority of the voters of the country de- sire the election of Grant and Célfax, but that there “is danger—grave danger—ihat the major- ity will. through apathy and mismanagement, | fer itself to be defeated by the minority.” Fraudulent voting by the opposiiom he con- | siders as one great cause of danger. “They | have,” he says, “in Pennsylvania, a regular | manufactory of counterieit naturalization papers, with the siolen sea! of a court, and | everything complete. They have cheated | us bagly with these papers; they will cheat us | far worse this year, if they can. So they will | in nearly every other State, The raw material | whence sham voters are manufactured i+ near- | Jy all in their hands. Unless extraordinary and systematic efforts shall be made to arrest | them. forty thousand illegal votes will be cast | against us this tail in our State alone, and New York thus carried for Suam Democracy, as Pennsylvania was last October Organization, | Vigilance, work. on 8 scale hitherto unknown, are umperatively required to prevent this calamity.” Secondly, stvs Mr. Greeley, the Republicans seem to be almost everywhere resting im the conviction that General Grant cannot possibly be beaten. This, he ((ireetey) holds is at once untrueand perilous. “He not only but veut be besten uniess the Republicans work with more energy and efficiency than they | have thus far done.” Indiaon.be says.is the only cioubttul State which seems to be contested by the Kepublicans with adequate zeal and indus. try. He hopes that Ohio will not be lost, but if there is no revival on the Republican side, their opponents at the October election will poll nearer to their full vote by ten thousand. than they. That disparity the party may be able to | stand, Dut he thinks it not safe to take the risk. | So of Pennsytvania. Will the fult Republican Yotebe polled’ He hopes, but fears. ‘The States are entitled to choose 317 electors, | whereot 159 are a majority. There should be no doubt, Mr. Greeley thinks, of Gen. Grant's carrying at least thes» Maine New Hampshire. Massach uset Rhode Island. Vermont ... we Michigan . Wisconsin tre . Indians. Ilinois. SWISS IMMIGRATION. We bad the plessure of an interview day with the Hon. John Hitz, Consul G of Switzerland, who has recently ret from Middle Tennessee. whither be Bad gone to inspect certain Iamds in Gruody Cognty, selected by Captain E,H. Plamacher, Agept of | the Swiss Emigration Suciety. as suitable for A settlement of a large Bumber of his coumtry- men who propose emigrating to the United Stotes. Mr, Hitz speaks very faverabiy of the locality selected by Captain Plumacher, and will encourage bis countrymen to settle in Grundy County. The lands selected for the first settlers comprise about 7.000 acres well umbered and Ted on what is known as the O©umberinne au, which rises above the , Vahey of the Camberland river some 1,100 feet, and is distant frem a branch of the Chattanooga: and Nashville railroad about eight miles. 7,40 acres have been donated to the | Swiss Fmigration Society by Col. Joseph | Hughes, of McMinnville, aa enterprising and Public spirited citizen of that locklity, In addition, other larce dongtions of Iaud are in prospect, aud the privilege to purchase no less than 240,060 acres of Iand in the vicinity of this first settlement, at prices ranging from one to two dollars per acre, has been secured, it ‘would seem, by Captain Plumacher. The fer- tility of the soil of these lands, their adapta- bility for the culture of vegetables, grain, fruits, And particulerly the vine, appear to have fully Satisfied the Consul General, Then, too, coal and iron is said to be found in abundance, and of the best quality. As to the healthiness of this section of Tennessee, Mr. Hitz seems to feel no doubt, as he failed to hear of any phys- ician residing im the whole county of Grundy, or to observe a single grave-yard. Mr. Hitz expressed himself highly gratified at the gen- eral interest taken by all classes and political | partisans im encouragmg immigration, both from the North and trom foreign parts, and feels confident that by pursning a Inberal |,pol- icy in this respect, the government of Terines- see and the Tennesseeans themselyes will ina few years reap material benefits, such as the favorable location of this fine State would seem to eniiue them to. ‘Tre Master Masons 60 To THE CoreTs.— A telegram to the STAn yesterday stated that | the New York master masons had undertaken to institute legal proceedings against the Brick- layers Association for combining to prevent them from obtaining lapor. It seems the mas- ter masons have fer some time been con- sitlering the subject of suing some of the brick- layers for alleged illegal actiou, but have had difficulty in obtaininga foundation on which to base « suit. Om Tuesday they caused subprenas to be Served upon several prominent members of the Bricklayers’ Association, and | they were examined fm the Fourth District | Court by the lawyer who represents the master | masons, with a yiew to obtaining evidence | with which to make a complaint for con- | spiracy. Before the examination had pro- ceeded far. however, the counsel for the brick- layers appeared and objected to the opposing counsel's making such an examination, or pro- fessing to appear for the people without an thority from the District Attorney—tnis being a purely criminal suit. The counsel stated to the Justice the illegality of the action, and directed his clients to answer no further ques- tions from: the opposing counsel. The case was then postponed for the presen! bat it will doubtless be bronght up again. Cunsderties oy Trapr— bales of American bay were shipped last week from New York to Europe, and as many more will be shipped the present week. In addition to this, there isa constant shipment of grain, Which is mostly used in Europe for feed and for distilling purposes. In the meantime lots of pig-irom and used-up rails are brought from (reat Hritain to the United States, | thouzh the bowels of our American soil are filled with iron to repletion. So, too, tas! Week, £30,000 ip specie came to the United States, though hundreds of thousands are taker to Europe at a cost of ; of one per cent. insurance, and \ of one per cent. freight, by almost every steamer, with a loss of iuterest of course on the specie brought to the Unitea States. Nothing would make a more curions article than the strange analysis of trade be- tested; and, while we have most voters in each, our adversaries seem for the present to have the best workers.” With the appliances now being used im the ‘South to induce the biacks to vote for Seymour and Bisir, he asks is there any assurance mat | say rebel State will vote for Grant’ Mr. Greeley sums up*with the conclusion that the Republicans must carry Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania for Grant and Colfax! With these—or even bait of them—there can be no mistake 3s tothe Tesult. Without at lerst two of them. all is in | doubt. Every one of them, he thinks, cam be | carried, except, po-sibly, New Jersey, it pro- | per exertions are made. Mr. Greeley’s speculations may be looked upon rm the light of a warning call to arms to | ‘s party. His reputation in political figuring ‘Will cause due weight to be xiven to his arti- cle, And it will, doubtless, serve its purpose in rousing that party to action. The estimates made by other Republican papers are much | more sanguine than those of Mr. (reeley, but a above stated, he prob.bly puts the worst = on the Republican prospects. as a fillip in- 2 drowsy spirits to work. x far as we can judge from our stand-point | We floating vote of the country is yet in a Mucruating, transition state.and that amount Of it necessary to decide the result of the Presi- or the other by influences developed between now and November.
