TRE PaRactayan WaR—Th- Attack on Hu- maita and Defeat of the Allics—Yesterday we published a telegram stating that the allied troops had been defeated in an attack on the Fortress Humaita, July 16th. We have since received by telegraph the following interesting particulars:—The Attack on the Paraguayan fortress (Humaita) occarred July 16th. In the morning, the combined Brazilian and Argen- tine forces, under command of Marquis De Caxirs, advanced to assault, in three columns, amounting in the aggregate to ten thousand men. Atthe same time a heavy fire was opened on the fortification by the fleet, iron-clads, and land batteries. yd pyre es and desperate fighting at the foot of the entrenchments, the allied columns retired without effecting a lodg> ment. The loss of the allies is reported at three thousand killed and wounded, Nothing is known of the loss of the Paraguayans; but, as they fought under cover of their entrench- ments, it is supposed that it will fall far short of that suffered by the allies. The allied force attacked Gran-Chaco, with the object of cat- ung the communications of Lopez. They found them detended by large body, firotected by breastworks. After an obstinate engagement, the allies withdrew to their former position. The casualties are not stated. The hopes of the war party rested npon the success of this move- ment, and its failure will give great impetus to the peace movement. This demand Fauth refused to recognize or accede to, but anticipating trouble. he in the meantime went to Messrs. Yesterday morning Fauth was brought up on a bench warrant to answer for setting at deflance the supreme Jaw of the land—the military—and was committed to jail to await the action of the military Commissioner in the matter. The Indians are now re- treating towards the Arkansas, with the mili- tary and volunteers in hot pursuit.
