THE EVENING STAR. ANOTHER KENTUCKY HORROR. led by a Ni Ser- Tried and Found ¥ Girl—She Guilty. [From tne Louisville Journal.} A gentleman from Kentucky gives the New ‘Albany Ledger the following particulars ofa terrible iesgnay enaene near castle, Hen- ry county. on Thursday last. The victim of ibe cold-blooded affair was an innocent litue bade of three years, child of Mr. William Graves, a well-known and highly res; ¢itizen of that county, and the destroyer a negro servant girl who had been living in the family several years. On y mentioned, while Mire Graves was attending to some do- mestic duties, the servant took the child from the house to @ tobacco patch in the rear of the stable, and about one hundred aad fifty yards from the house. Here, it appears from her own confession, she made the child lay down on the ground, and after crossing its hands on ite breast, and making it bid its pa and ma good-bye, the fiend seized 3 stone and crushed ite bead almost to a jelly. She then seized it by the ankle and dragged it over the stubble to some thick undergrowth, where it was con- cealed trom human view. ‘A few moments after this the mother missed the child, and ran out to search for it, bat the girl denied knowing anything about the child, saying it must beim the Douse. The premises ‘were thoroughly searched by the almost fran- tic mother, while every thought of spot about the place was examined by Mr. Graves, and several neighbors who joined in the search. All efforts to induce the girl to tell the where- abouts of the child proved ofnoavail. Atlast one gentleman, while searching, discovered her slipping away, and after a sharp chase she ‘was caught, and by the most violent threats was induced to lead them to the spot where the murder had been committ There, in the bushes, the child was found, and althongh it had been three hours since the commission of the deed, It gasped twice after being taken out. The back of the head was horribly bat- tered, and the back was terribly lacerated, where it had been dragged over the stubble to the place of concealment. ‘The entire neighborhood were highly ex- cited at the murder, and threats of lynching were freely uttered. However. better coun- sels prevailed, and the girl was taken to New- castle and arraigned in the Circuit Qourt now in session, for murder in the first degree. She was convicted by the jury of the crime as charged, but up 'o yesierday the Judge had hot passed centence. "it is the opinion of our informant that she will be hung. It was developed on trial that this was the third ehild she bad killed, two white, and one colored. The murder of the colored child oc- curred @ short time ago, and the deed was done In such manner that no one at the time suspected that a murder bad been committed. The child bad been held with its feet up until & Tush of blood to the head caused death to re- lieve it from its suffering. The only cause assigned by the girl for the last murder was Decause ebe felt mad at her mistress, Mrs. Graves. We wore unable to learn the name cf the murderer. Virginia News. Very large quantities of flour are now reaching Richmond, via James River and Kanawha Canal and the Virginia and Central Railroad. The larger portion comes by rail, and is from the Virginia Valley. The Valley brands are becoming highly popular, and many ofthe Richmond merchants are exert- ae themselves to secure the trade of the Val- fe. More Boter DeeTRvction.—The boiler explosion which occurred in New York city on day furnishes a sad ilustration of a point that we have frequently made in these columns, viz.: that a proper method of constructing new boilers, and an effective means for the inspec- tion and regulation of those iow in use, are subjects of vital importance, not only to the employers and employees in all buildings where steam power is used, but also to all ci'l- zens. Do matter how remote they may be from these fearful magazines of destructive power.
