ANTIETAM. On the 17th of September, five years ago ‘Was decided in favor of ihe national arms one of the-severest contlicts which occurred dur- ing thectvil war. Tbe rebels, flushed with their victery at the second battle of Bull Run, crossed the Potomac into Maryland, and threatened to penetrate into and desolate the most fertile region of Pennsylvania. Our tioops, weary, sick, and discourzged by their reverses, met the enemy with noble heroism, and in the consciousress that the fate of the country depenced on their exertions, fought ‘with a courage and decper-tion which Lee's veterans could not withsiand, and the invading host sullealy retired into Virginia. The ever- lasting gratitude ot the country is due to the noble soldiers who turned the tide of misfortune at such &@ critical period in our history, and the celebration on the battle fleld to-day isa fit- tung tribuce of horor and rezpect to those of our brave decenders who perished in the mighty corflict. How well our troops fought is told by Swinton in his «+ Deci-ive Battles of the War.” He says: “McClellan opened the conflict by seizing the initiative, and hurling his right (the Corps of Hooker) against the left of his antagonist. it will be remembered that in the east woods Hood s Division had the might before been re- lieved by two brigades ot Ewell’s Divi Jackson’s Corps. These were early e morning strengthened by another brigade. In Addition to this division, there was at this time present with Jackson only the Stonewall Di. vision under Gen. Jones, for the divisi P. Hill bad not yet returned Ferry. But while Ewell’s Div thrown forward in advance, the Stonewall Di- | vision was held in hand behind outcropping ledges of limestone in the wood near Dunker | Ohurch: so that the attack at first fell alone | upon the three brigades in the east wood. The | assault was made by Hooker's centre Division, as it happened, was the division of Pennsylvania Reserves under Meade—Dou- bleday’s Division being on its right—Ricketts’ on Its left. it was marked by wonderful im- petuosity on the Union side, and by stubborao resistance on the part of the fonfederates, However, after an hour's fighting, sach was the vigor with which ‘be attack was pressed, and sodestructive to Juckson’s troops was the fire of the numerons batteries on the east side of the Antietam (placed, says Jackson, so as to enfilade bis line) that the Confederate bri- | gades gave back with great loss across the open field and over the Hagerstown road to the woods beyond the Dunker Church, where | Jackson's reserves lay. If it had occurred to General Hooker at this time to bring up the Corps of Mansfield, form it on his right, and ‘with this well-developed front assail the Con- federate left, there is no doubt that the whole ‘of that wing might have heen swept away. ‘There is a commanding eminence to the right of where Hooker's flank rested, which would thus bave been occupied, and as itis the ke of the field. taking en revers, the woods wit the outcropping ledges of Jimestone where Jackson’s Reserves lay, i's possession would an sil likelihood have been decisive of the field. Hooker falled to perceive this: but he advanced bis line to reap the troit of his first advantage—thrusting tor- ward bis certre and leftover the upen field to- wards the woods west of the Hagerstown road. No sooner, however, bad the troops ap- proached the crest of the plateau than Jack- son's Reserves, with the reformed battalions of Ewell’s Division, emerged from the woods and joined issue with the advancing line in a combat of extraordinary ferocity. Equal in mettle, the combatants faced each other on the open plain withm shor! range, neither side yielding, and both plying their deadly work ‘with such desperate ardor, such inflexible de- termination as few battle-fields have witness- ed. The mortzl struggle was only ended when at length the opposing fronts had torn each other to shreds. Then both sides retired ; but, even when the broken ments went back, the spectators from the distant stand- joint of the east side of the Antietam conld Brace im the dead that covered the ground where lines had stood—dreadfal witness of a struggle whose character may be gathered from the statement of the mortality it entail- ed.” a eee STATIONERY FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRE- SENTATIVES.
