* THE EVENING STAR. Solling When Pastures is Shert. However much farmers may cling to their old habits and look with suspicious distrast upon all new and untried systems of teedin which world {rn all pastures tntd corn, o1 grain fleids, oF meadows; still they have found, by experienc, that @ thrifty patch of green corn foader isa great help in Angust, Seprember, end even: October, when pasture! are short and cows sbrink their milk. Since dairying bas become so important a part ot our agriculture, greater attention is paid to giving the cow & more uniform feed thorongh the season, than the pastures Alone furnish. Few localities are bieseed with yield.a uniformly abundant feed throug: the whole season, and unless cows get other food, their geueral product will met enrich the ain to recover the full flow of milk, {t etten happens that a deficiency of food for only afew weeks, reduces the yield of milk through the seasons, so materially as to render the result of the year a failure instead of a success. The cardinal principal of the dairy- men shorld be to supply his cows, at all sea- song, with an abundant, nutricious and milk- producing diet. There should be no departure from this rule. Apy want of liberal ty here will be panished, seven-fold in the balance. amt At ibe iid of the year. * is now time for all dairyman to make provision fer his contingency The best crop for early soiling 18 clover: and every farmer should haye a small piece of ground near the baru, in clover, to be used for this purpose, if Meeded; if not it will make exeellent winter food. One acre of good clover fed green is equal to four and sometimes even six acres of pas- ture. But corn. sown for fodder, will meet the most usual necessity of the dairyman— food for a dry August and September. This may be sown, ay the 2thof May and the 10th of June. Sow early. so as to be used in im August and it ehould not be looked upon gs an additional expense in keeping the dairy, for it is the greatest economy in feeding. One acre of good corn fodder is equal from six to ten acres of pasture, and worth much more fed green tban dry. If any thinks the Jast figure extravagant, let him measure off forty square rods of ground in heavy corn Jodder. and feed it te his cows, noting the Jength of time it will keep them. and compare this with two and a half acres of pastare: Some lerge crops ot eorn fodder bave been ‘weighed green, and found to yield atthe rate ef sixty tons to the acre, equai to bout sever tons of dry fodder. This is, no doubt, a large crop, but itdemcnstrates that corn is one of the cheapest foods for the cow. It would te the best economy for farmers to reduce their pastures and increase their green clover and corn to be fed instead. They would soon find their farms too large for their stock, and their Profit in increasing thelr stock and not their nd. About one acre to eight or ten cows will be sufficient to help out the pasture in a dry time. It will also well repay the dairyman to feed small quantities of pea meal. oil meal and bran during the summer to his cows. It will more than pay back the outlay in milk, besides he better condition of the cow. The great should be to Keep the greatest number Ison the smallest quantity of land. Every additional animal. well kept, will, by mereasing the manure, enlarge the capacity to keep more. A.S., in Rural Yorker. pdt SHOCKING Dowmeric TRaGEDY.—A Mo- ile er relates the following heart-rending killing of a mother by her son by mistake: “The family of a prominent citizen residing on St. Louis street, and now absent on a visit to Pensacola, bad, one or two days before, been disturbed by anattempt at burglary. The only son present on the premises was, at the time, sick in bed, and had taken some opium to lull his pains. "ast night, after midnight, the mother of the family awoke. and suppos- ing there was some one trying to force an en- wrance in her room, she slipped off her bed and entered the adjoining room, where her son, still under the effect of @ soporific potion, was uneasily resting. To avoid alarming him, the tender mether gently shook him by the arm, when, horrible to relate, the unfortunate con aroused from his heavy slumber, and before Daving recovered from its effects, supposed that some robber bad entered his room, and, fetching out a pistol from under his pillow, twice pulled the fatal trigger, and sent the bullet through the throat of his beloved mother, who, in the agenies of her death, faith. fulto her maternal instinct, exclaimed, ‘Son! son! you did'nt mean it. God bless yo Awakening to the terrible reality, the adores mois man Tushed out to seize in his arms his g mother, and the whole family having Bastened to the room, the saintly matron re- peated ber words of forgiveness and soon ex- ired in the midst of her beloved family.
