TRE DEATH OF GEN. GRIFFIN. The announcement of the death of Brevet Major General Charles Griffin at Galveston’ irom yellow fever, will be received with pro- found regret. He wasa brave and able sol- dier, Wbo, throughout thy rebellion, performed active and efficient service. As ranking of- ficer (be was, under Sheridan, the commander ©f the eub-district of Texas) he succeeded to the temporary command of the Fifth Military District on the removal of Gen. Sheridan. At his own request he was permitted to remove the headg uarters of the department to Galveston, ‘where he was then stationed—he declaring it ‘Would seem like a desertion of his post to leave there whiist the fever was prevailing so ma- lignantly, and the officers and soldiers were 89 greatly suffering trom its ravages. He re- Tiained, and has falien a victim to his consci- entious ideas of soldierly duty. General Griffin was admitted to West Point from the State of Ohio, and graduated in 1S47 in which year he was breveited second lieuten- ant m the 4th United States artillery. On April 25 161, he was commissioned Captain in the 5th United States artillery, and in that ca- Pscity made his battery one of the most famous in the Army of the Potomac. During the great campaign of 186i in Virginia he especially dis. tinguished himse! the commander of the 1st division of the sth army corps, to which be hed been appointed, with the rank of Briga- dier General of Volunteers. On the 13th of March, 1565, he was brevetied Major General, and at the famous baitle of the Five Foras, where Warren was summarily deposed by Sheridan for his 1ack of promptitude in action, General Griffin was assigned to the command of the Sth corps, for which responsible posi. tion he proved himeeif fully competent by his conduct in the sharp engagement just men- tioued, and throughout the rapid and yigorcus | pursuit of Lee's flying army. In the georgani_ zation of the army, since the close ofthe war, he received the rank of Colonel of Intaniry, OF THE POTOMAC in Patterson, of the Coast Sur- vey, Assistant Clarence Fendali, of that branch of the service, is now engaged in sur. yeying the Potomac for Gen. Michler, of the eer Department; and the schooner Hass . OW, lying anchored above the Long Bridge, is employed im that work. Captain Patterson made a survey of the river in 1562, and all changes in the channel since that time are row carefully noted, to show the action of | the water, &c. Thus far, only that portion above the bridge has beeu surveyed; but little change in the depth of water nas been noted, and the 12-foot chanuel in the flats south of the Observatory, which was reported to have been made by the ice last winter, is reported as 9 myth, at least at this time, as no trace what- ever can be fonnd of it. ‘The survey 1s made in accordance with the Provisions of section 4 of the River and Har- bor bill of March 2, 1867, which directed the Secrecary of War ‘to cause examinations or surveys, Or both,’ to be made at various pointe, among them the Potomac river at the District of Colnmbia.” 1t is to be hoped thi this action will pave the way for the intro- duction hereafter in the annual River and Harbor bili of an appropriation fer the im. provement of ourchanuel such as is usually made in that bill for harbor and river im- provement for localities having not a tithe of the claim upon Government for such appro- priations as has the river front of the national capital. RDS. A canard was set afloat in this city on Satur. day, that ex-Senstor Cowan, of Pennsylvania, bad been appointed Secretary of War. Tnere is no truth whatever in the story, We know that Mr. Cowan does not want the place, and would not take it GEN. SICKLES COMING TO WASHINGTON Major General Daniel E. Sickles, U. 8. Clubs favor- able to tbe election of General Grant to the Presidency are being formed throughout the State. 1tis known thatthe German voters or- ganized throughout the State to oppose the Satbath legislation, and voted the Democratic ticket by thousands for that purpose. Higby, Umion, is certainly elected to Uongress from the Middle District. He was the most radical candidate in the field. The two Democratic Congressmen elected are Mr. Axtell, of San Francisco, who favored the war andsupported Mr. Lincoln; and Mr. Johnson, of Sierra Ne- vada, a lawyer, of whom little is known. Exouisn OP ‘he Richings’ Opera ‘Troupe will open the National Theatre this evening for the season, the initial performance being the «Bohemian Girl,” which the com- pany always sing with spirit. Judging trom the great number of seats sold last week, and being disposed of to-day, the house will be crowded at this inauguration of the opera season, which bids fair to bea highly successful one.
