Dry Goods. ‘Wehad the unpleasant duty last week of noti¢ing the failure of a very prominent dry goods house, and we have this week toadd the nares of two more firms that have been com- pelled to succumb during the past weer. ‘hese two more unfortanates arethe very re- spectable importers of British goods, Fair- iid, Fanshaw & Uo-,and Loesdrigk, Willard & Rhodee. To these might be added tl james of two or three jobbers, and the name of another large importing’ house in extreme dimficulty if not actually suspended. The trade in domestics for the week has been rather Mmited, but prices have been firmly msintain- ed. The abundant harvests are already be- ginning totell on tne trade. Brown sheetings And shirtings move readily at onr quotations, and there ie @ better demand for the finer qaalites for bleaching. In bleached good the stoek has very censinly decreased, while the demand for common grades has exhibited marked degree of improvements. There hardly anything doing in drille, but the dmand for jeans, which we noticed last week as active, still continues. Stripes are but lite le called for. Ticks are inactive, and the market is well supplied. Denims add cotton- ades are neglected, and the queted rates are merely nominal, Printing-cloths are quiet: there is very little inquiry for cloths im the grsy. The demand for prints has been more lively, and seasonable styles are in good re- quest at quoted prices. The fall patterns beve not yet been exhibited; they will meet a good demand when they come. In giaghams the demand has improved somewhat, and the finer qualities find a ready sale. Through the fesson is advanced for light printed lawns, the better kinds maintain their prices: but a slight concession is not denied when there is a dis, Position to give large orders. Rolled jaconets. silesias, and cambrics are without material cbange. Muslin de laines are less inquired for than they have been. The demand from the clothing manufacturers gives a firm tone to the prices of Italiam cloths, which are in con- siderable request at this season, especially in the medinm grades, The same remarks will apply to most qualittes of woolen cloths, though there is considerable irregularity in Prices. Kentucky jeans are extremely dull, and the market weil supplied. 1n the carpet trade there is very little doing; the season of the year is unfavorable, but prices are firm. In Waite Plains, eight places were emteredina single night. Very soona man named Hawley B. Nichols was suspected and closely watched by several detectives, in- cluding Rovert Montgomery of New York. By cunning devices the detectives gained the confidence of the suspected men, Monigomery assuming the character of a horse thief, under the name ot Robert Smith, securing beard with Nichols athis house in Newtown, Ct.,and trading with him in stolen goods. Finally, the 5th inst, was fixed upon fer making the arrest. ‘The sequel is given by the Bridgeport Stand. ard, as tollows:— ‘The officersin question come te the depot on the 5th, and drove over to Dick's Hotel, where they waited to hear from Montgomery, and presently received a note telling them to come quickly. In the meantime, Mongomery think- ing they had ample time to get his note, and that they must appear soon, met Nichols in the parlor of bis house, on the second story, and commenced a conversation with nim, and ledto bis saying finally, «Mr. Nichole, I am not Bob. Nichols took the wri glancing atitas ifto satisfy himself that it was Asure thing this time, and then sprang attbe detective, taking Lim by the throat— Nichols is alarge powerful man,and grappled Montgomery in deadly earnest, dragging nim to a door that opened on to the street but from which it was a clean pitch, into the road, there being no etairs or verandah at all. At the door Moutgomery brought up against Acbair. and getting a purchuse, threw Nichols off, but he seized him and again throwing him 10 the ground, held him by the throat. Mont- gomery then drew hisrevolyer and shot Nich- ols ip the jeg, the ball entering below the knee and glancing up. Montgomery eays that Nichols fired @t Rim, the shot just- glazing his arm. He re:urned the fire, this time shooting Nichols through the body, the bali entering below the breast bone ard lodging in the back a few inches higher up than the point of en- trance. He fell, and Montgemery immedi- ately ran ont Of doors and barnessed a borse tosend for a physician. While engaged doing this the other officers arrived, and Nichols was made as comfortable as possible; and a physician brought, who examined the woun| Abd pronounced the one through the sody fatal.
