LOCAL NEWS. The Smoot Homicide. HABEAS CORPUS APPLIED FOR. This morning a writ of habeas corpus was applied for by Mr. Davidge in the case ot Hen- ry Johnson committed for the murder of Thos. S. Smoet, returnable betore Judge Wylie at 2 o'clock this atternoon. At two o'clock theaccused was brought by Warden Brown. where Judge Wylie was sit- ting, when, in consequence of the tact not baving become generally known, there was but a small number of persons gathered. The accused was represented by W. D. Davidge and John H. Johnson, Esqs. Afew moments were spent in waiting for District Attorney Carrington, but he gave his censent to the case proceeding without being present, and Dr. C. H. Bowen was sworn, and testified to the situation in which he found Smoot. The wound over the right eye with the hemorrhage, he had no doubt produced death. The witness Jane E. Dorsey was called but she did not answer. The Court asked if it was simply to prove the shoeting that she was wanting. Mr. Davidge said that he wished toproye the adultery Wn. M. Kelly. sworn.—Witness went to the £uardnouse and saw the accused; he stated to witness be tound Smoot sitting on the side of the bed undressed: spoke to them: Smoot got up and went to a burean to open a drawer, as it to get something, when he (Johnson) fired the shot. By the Judge —Witness asked ‘why he did not give it to them both?” and Johnson re- plied that he did not go there for that purpose. Question.—Did he say he suspected her betore!” A—He said be had received informa- tion that she would be there with the man. Mr. Davidge stated that be was calling these ‘witnesses for the prosecution, and they were those who would have been called the Government if Gen. Carrington was present. He did not see how he could get along with- out the witnesses Mrs. Sawyer and Mrs. Dor- sey. The case was postponed until 10 o'clock Monday. ————= ees THE PRIzE FOR SrELLine.—This morning, the examination of grammar schools to award the Rhees prizes for spelling took place at the school-rooms, 5th street, between E and F. ‘The examining committee were Messrs. Rhees, ‘Wilson, Clark and Whyte. Oaly thegremmar schools were examined to-day. Theexamina- tion of intermediate schools was postponed until Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, same piace. Forty pupils, five from each grammar school, were present. Fifty difficult words were put ont, and forty-nine of them spelled by George M. Davis. of the Fourth District Male Grammar School, John E. Thompson teacher. Divis was accordingly awarded the prize, a hand- come writing case, presented by Mr. Wm. Ballantyne. Second best, Charles Lewis, of First District. missed but two words. The committee was unanimous in itsaward The -ingle word missed was ‘coliectible,” which was spelled + collectable.” The spell- ing was all excellent, the average best, as well he premium, being conceded to the tourth district: and the next best average was by the scbools of the first district. The prize for the best speller of the intermediate schools is a gold medal, given by J. Dobson, President.”* It is stated that about twenty bricklayers, who left Richmond before the publication of the above, arrived here yesterday, but returned home on learning the cause of the strike. ———— Hichway RoBBER Yesterday, officer Westfietd, of the Second Precinct, arrested Emory Parker, azed 12 years, upon the charge of bighway robbery. 1t appeared in evi- dence, before Justice Walter, that the little boy had been sent by his mother to parchase bread, and the accused met him on the road and took the mogey from him. Another boy saw the act, and Went to take the money from him when Wm. Parker, father of the accused, assaulted and beat the new comer. Justice ‘Walter sent the cases to court; Emory Parker for highway robbery, and Wm. Parker tor as- sault and battery. ent NATIONAL OF FERING.—An important move- ment for the relief of the destitute in the South is in progress in this city, at No. 370 Pennsy!- vania avenue, Metropolitan Block, under the supervision of Mr. George W. Thomas, of New York city. Mr. Thomas brings with him high testimonials for integrity ot character, busi- ness energy, and a philanthropic spirit. By his utiring exertions he succeeded recently in securing to the home and school for the chil- dren of deceared and ditabled soldiers and sailors, in New York. the sum of 399,000. A man working in the vicinity saw the accident, and seon caught the lad and pulled im out of the waier. The remains were taken to the East ‘Washington Methodist Onurch, where the fu- neral discourse was delivered by Rev. George Y.
