THE EVENING STAR. THE ALBANY TRAGEDY.—The New York Sunday Herald says:—The Albany tragedy bas assumed a new aad curious phase ‘tr. Hadley, counsel for the prisaner, was yester- sy presented bythe grand jury of Alban: eeunty for contemp: in not fally snes b certtin questions before them relative to cer- tain papers of the prisoner which Baa come into his pecans professienally, and an ore der of the court was asked for to compel him to produce a letter said to have been written by Cole at Syracuse just before the tragedy occurred. The order was eranted and served mpon Hadley, who made return that tha pa- per was received by him as counsel fo~ the prisoner, and assuch was a privileged com- Munication. Afteran argument between Ly- man Tremaine, counsel for Hadley, and the District Attorney, the court issued an order for the production of the paper, which Mr. Hadley thereapon placed in the possession of the clerk of the court. General Benjamin F, Batler, upon whose staff the prisoner Cole served during the war, is said to have been retained for the defence x STRIKZ IN PiTTsRURG.—On Saturday, June 1, the workmen employed in Lippincott, Baker & Co.'s ax tactory, Pittsburg, Pa.. struck for Digher wages. 1t appears that previous to last January the head hammerer received @1.42, and their helpers $3.37 per handred. The bit drawers received $3.35, and their helpers $293}5. On the 21st of tast January the nam- merer’s wages were reduced to 33.25, and their belpers to $225. The bit drawers and their belpers were reduced to $275 and $1.75 per hundred. The workmen state that they came very near striking at the time, but were told that if they would work at the reduced wuges for sixty or ninety days, the rates would be increased again. They worked until Satur- day—over four months—and thinking tne ninety days was about over, asked an increase of pay, and the proprietors refased to give them only fifty cents per hundred more to the hammerers, and twenty-five cents to bit draw- ere. The workmen say they will not resume ‘work until the old rates are paid. Bir py a Map Doc.—On ‘Sunday a little daughter o/ G. OC. Bayne, formerly of Acco- mac county, Virgiaia, but now of Bultimore, being over on 4 visit, wa- bitten by a dog sup- pored to be laboring under chatdread malady, the hydrophobia, ihe dog escaping too soon to meet the merited reward. He returned, how- ever, on Monday, and while atiempting to tle him, he bit a boy by the nameof Wm. Conner, onthe hand. The dog wa then killed. Dr. McMaster cauterizedithe boy’s hand—theonly remedy known—and otherwise admini: ‘ed to his reliet.—_New!own ( Md.) Gazelle. Divorcxs 1n CONNECTICUT.—A petition is now before the special committee on divorces in the Connecticut Legislature, signed by a muwber ofthe most prominent lawyers of New Haven, to the effect that parties applying for divorces are not to be divorced, but are to be still held as man and wife, except in this, that they are to live separately, and to suffer a special fine it at:erwards convicted ofadultery. BZA sensation was created in a Bureau school in Christiansburg, Va., by the sudden appearance therein of one Mrs. Kitty McMel- vin, colored, who came pre ided with a long Jeathern thong, with which to avenge some insult which the school marm had put upon her daughter. The school marm fled, and es- caped the wrath to come. $s @7 Peddlers are perambaiating the State of Georgia, selling what they style “land scrip” to the colored people. They inform the latter that the Government will 1n a few days con- fiscate the lands of tne whites and give them to the recent slaves. Certificates of land to be entered upon are sold at prices ranging from one to three dollars each. m7 The City Council of Nashville has Paced a law which provides for the education of all colored children between the ages of five and fifteen. An immediate census has been ordered, and the Board of education instructed to purchase or rent school buildings, employ teachers, and manage the schools precisely as the schools tor white children are managed. ————_________ S7-Ot the 13,060,000 boitles of champagne sent annually to market from Rheims and meighboring places. the United Stat-; takes at least 2,000,000.
