Tbe bosses were vo'ified through- out tbe city, and on Saturday last the rule went into Operation. A few ot «the bosses” proposed to “dock” the workmen for the two hours, but when told by the men that if they Gia nol receive full pay for Saturday they Would not be on hand on Monday, agreed to erde. Sa aig VIOLENT ASSAULT AND BATTERY.—Yester- day, Lewis Wilson. colored, was arrested by Officer Lusby. of the Fifth Ward, for a violent &ssault and battery upon Henry Middleton, colored. He was taken to the station, where, upon examination, it appeared that Middleton and Wilson were together, Middleton sligh ly intoxicated. Wilsou invited him into nis house, and told bim to ledown. Middleton did so, ana then Wilson deait him a blow that ren- dered him senseless. Wilson drew a razor anda biliy trom his pocket, when a female told Lim not to strike him, and Wilson’s wife took the billy from bim. Wilson said he would cut his d—d throat, and kicked him several times on the head, severely cutting and bruising him. Wilson was required to give bail for court, asd stand committed in default. Ce —— ————— SUDDEN DEATH. —Yes erday,Goroner,Wood- Ward beid an inquest in view of tne body ofa colored m&n named Henry Pierce, who died suadenly at his late residence on Capitol Hill. Deceased was apparently in his usual health Saturday, but Sunday morning se complained ofa violent pain in his breast. A mustard plesier was applied, and he died shortly after. r. Ford, at the request of the police. held a post Mortem examination, a disagreeable ope- ration, for which surgeons seldom get paid, certainly not in this case, and upon his report the jury rendered a verdict of death from the enlargement of the heart. At the Northern Market, Mr. Hol- lingshead, of the Washingtonians, presided, and addresses were made by Rev. r. Hen- ning, W.G. Finney, T.G. Olayton, and Col. Curtis. At the Centre Market the meeting un. der the auspices of Equal Division was held, Mr. A. Shepherd presiding. and addresses ‘were made by Messrs. E. G. blopfer, O. Alex- ander, W. G. Finney, O. K. Harris. Vance, Grabam, Savage. and others. Atthe Western Market and at Odd Fellews’ Hall, Navy Yard, Meetings were held and largely at:ended. At Temperance Hall, im the evening, the public meeting of the Washingtonians was held, and it was densely crowded. Addresses were made by Mr. U.K. Harris, Gen. Howard, and Ex-Gov. Thomas H. Ford. The latter madea powerful appeal in behalf of the cause, anda number in the audience were moved to tears. (Quite a number of persons signed the pledge, and numbers of the signers signified their in- tention of joining the ether temperance organ- izations.
