Before the war she married a physician who settled im Georgia, and at the breaking out of the war he entered the service, and was killed or died 4n service in the first ye4r‘of the war. She then’ made her way through the lines and came to.this:cityy where she secured a place in the Treasury epartment, which she held until January-or February last, residing dur- ing the most of the time iu the northern part of the city. Last fall, it is stated, she was en- ciente by Carter, and athisadvice went North Wherea child (a girl,since named Mary Bianchke Jordan.) was born. Carter took his wife to the same town, and by representing her as a competent person to take charge of the child, succeeded im ge‘ting possession of it. Mrs. Jordan, with her chil- dren, (one the babe re‘erred to aboye,) was on the same train. ~ en Vistt OF THE CoRrORATE AUHORITIEG TO THE ALMS Houss.—Yesterday afternoon, in compliance with an-invitation received from the Intendant, the Mayor, with a nunther of members of the City Councils and other gen- Uemen, visited the Alms House, and inspected the building and grounds about the same. The gardens are looking very well, and in excellent order. The buildings are kept neat and clean, and the affairs of the asylum are conducted in An excellent manner by Mr. Hodgson, the Intendant. After going through the building, and around the garden, the company was invited to the dinimg room, where a bountiful Tepast was spread and a good time passed. Tait, McCathran, and Cross, Councilmen Stewart, Pench, Simms, Joyce, Calvert, Bryan, Talbert, and Peake: Randolph Coyle, ‘Water Registrar: Samuel E. Douglas, City Register; E. J. Kiopter, Mayor’s Gierk; Wm. Morgan, Tax Olerk; John McDevitt, and Cap- tains Wm, Sliter and James Kelly. Commis- sioners ofthe Asylum; Dr. E. A. Adams, Sec- Tetary of the Board of Commission Dr. McKim, Physician to the Asylum; Dr. New- man; Wm. Dixon, resident student; Dr. Crog- gon and Fred. W. White, of the Board of School Trustees. and others. Addresses were delivered by the Mayor, Thomas E. Lloyd. Eres Alderman Tait, Councilman Pengh, and others. Dr. McKim bas ably filled the position of attending physician for the past six years. At the present time there are 1S7 inmates of the building, 124 in the Alms House and 63 in the Work House. Witness bere produced the small notes ($50): cashier's signatures appears as Sanford, and believés them to be in the handwriting of the accused. The prosecution offered to produce in evi- dence a letter in the handwriting of the ac- cused, with a view of submitting {it to experts, to make a comparison with the alleged signa- tures on the notes. Mr. Phillips objected, and Mr. Oarrington ‘withdrew the offer. Mr. Carrington was about to examine the Witness in regard to the larceny of stationery, to which Mr. Phillips objected, and the ob- jection was argued. The justice decided that both cases might be beard at once. ‘Witness resamed—Exa mined & book which he identified as one prepared in the office, as #lso one of the packages of paper which had been ruled for the office. He identified two boxes of soap as being the same as used in the office. A gross ef pencils, several inkstands, boxes of pens were p duced and identified as being similar to thosé used, im the office. By the defense:—There are about eighty empioyees of the office. The money was kept in the cash-room, in which there are about twenty employed. Thereare but four or five who had access to the vault; only three whose official duty feads them to goin. Jonni Bur- Tonghs Edward Myers are vault clerks; L. M. Price is;the cavnier. Weekly examina- tions are made of the yaults. Schureman had the right to enter the vault when specially there. [The examination is yet in progress.} = REVIEW OF PHB MRBTROPOLITAN POLICE — This morning, @t. ten o’clock. the annuai re- view of the Metropolitan Police took place in front ofthe City Hall, The entire force was present with the exceptién of one man left im charge of each stauge. The force rendez- voused at the Central G@uardhouse at nine o'clock, where the battalion was formed un- der the command of Capt. Reed, inspector of the force, and made a yery handsome appear- ance in their new uniform of dark biue cloth, ‘with neat white straw hat, and a broad black band, The formation was in reguiar mijitary style, with marker’s flags upon the right and lett, and a yery handseme silk U.S. flagio the center. The men ofthe precincts, within the limits of the Corporation, formed a bat- talion of infantry, it may be cailed, amd the monnted men of the county formed a cavalry ‘company. The marching and the movements in column and from column inte line, showed that they bad improved raidly under the in- structors at the various stations. The force wes reviewed by Dr. 0. H. Nichols. President of the Board of Poiive; Major A.C. Richards, Superintendent of Police; W, J. Murtagh, Treasurer of the M. P: Gen. P. F. Bacon, Hon. Chas. D. Welch, Mayor of Georgetown, and Chas. S. English, Esq., Commissioner of Police. After the review, the battalion wheeled into eolhwmn and proceeded to pay their respects'to the President and Secretar: of tbe Interior. The procession haited on F street, in front of the Patent Office, and were reviewed by Judge Otto, acting Secretary of the Interior, who expressed himself to Major Richards as highly pleased with the appear- anee of the force. = +9 —___ ANNIVERSARY OF THE YOUNG MHNS’ CHRIS- TIAN AssociaTION.—The fourteenth annivyer- sary of the Young Mens’ Christian Associa- iton was held last evening at the Calvary Baptish church, and attended by a large num- berof ladies and gentlemen. —After prayer by Rey. Dr. Gillette, Rev. J. E. Brown, of Grace eburch, delivered an address, referring to the good work accomplished by the association, 8nd urging them to continne to prevent the unwary and young from straying from the path of rectuude, Rev. A. A. E. Taylor, of Gspresiown, sso delivered an able address. Mr. A.K. Browne, Esq., chairman of the executive finance committee,. stated that the Inte residence of Hudson Taylor, Esq., on the corner of Ninthand D streets, having been purchased fer the Christian Association for the sum of $40,000, it would require $100,000 to erect such an edifice as the association de- sired. The amount necessary for the members to raise was $25,000, (310,000 of which had al- ready been supscribed,) in order to secure ap immediate outside subscaiption of 275.000.
