‘ THE EVENING STAR. The Largest Circulation in the District re D. WALLACH, Réiter and Propricter. WASHINGON CITY : SATURDAY. -APRIL 20, 1867. S7 READING MATTER ON BEVERY PAGE. SEE OUTSIDE FOR (NTERESTING TELE GRAPHIC AND OTHBK MATTER. MARCH (NG ON If disembodied spirits continue to take an in- terest insublumary sifairs, then the seul of old John Brown” may be supposed to ex- perience some degree of grim satisfaction at the change of affairs in the Old Dominion, Which bas taker place since the aforesaid soul ‘Waa released from its earthly tabernacle and sent “marchiwg on” by the ruliag powers in *District- No.1." The age of prophecy has certainly departed, as no seer arose at that tame to predict that int. few years the degraded colored population would be a power in the State. However, if such a prophet had arisen m Tginia, he would not only have been without credit in his own country, but would Dave run some risk of receiving the srown of martyrdom. Changes since that time are so wonderful that it is Dot strange the late slave owners find it bard te realize that their chattels have become their political equals, and chafe under the penalties brought upon them by their in- sane attempt to destroy the Union. Persons who bave lived all their days in the free Sates can form no adequate conception of the magnitude of the social and political revo- intien in the Southern States. To the minds of many Northern people it would merely Present itself as a question of giving the | elective franchise to a class of People | heretofore excluded from the batlot box be- | eause of the dark color of their skins; a | class eo small in most of the Northern States that they would bave no appreciable in- Mluerce as a class in shaping legislation. The Sowthern aristocrat, on the contrary, from his stand point, regards it with the same hor- | Tor 5 was experienced by the nobility of | France at the revolution which broke up the foundations of society in that country. In| fact, the Southern press are continually draw. | ing parallels between thetwo. They overlook the great difference, however, that in this country every violation of law has either come from the class in the Somth who made war | upon the Government. in which they hada | Votce,or Ras been the direct resuit of their terce assaults upon the government of the people, necessitating severe measures to save the life of the nation. It is needless, how- ever, to pursue this theme, because the intel- Higent masses of our countrymen cannot be deceived by the sophistries which fil) the Southern press. As we have said, | the revolution is a sweeping one, but it is founded on justice, and will yet result in rais- img the South to a degree of prosperity that sectiog could never have attained under the old regime. The colored people (their former masters admit) have conducted themselves with gtpat prudence and moderation so far and are not likely to be less guarded in their conduct as the work of education goes on ‘There is really no good reason why the two races should not work together harmoniously for the development of the South, and the Present generation may yet live to see that section as prosperous as the North and West. When that day comes, (as come it will,) and not till them, will the result of the great work of the past six years be tully seen and appreci- ated, and the men who have taken Partin the struggle for and against freedom in the South be estimated at their proper vglue. RS Aes siete cs bial elle THE SENATE TO-DAY, Just before going to press we learn that tne Se bas confirmed the nominations of Sid- ney E. Gay as Assessor of Internal Revenue, and Edward Callahan as Collector in ths 9th District of New York, (Wood's district in the city,) also the nomination of Mr. Haberson as surveyor of customs at Philadelphia, and that Col. Baxter, formerly of the Philadelphia Fire Zouaves, would without doubt be con. Srmed as naval officer of that Port. There eems to be no doubt that the Senate will ad_ ourn this afternoon. pr THE AUSTRIAN MISSION There seems to be no reason to suppose that the Senate to-day will reconsider its actioy of yesterday, im laying the nomination of Henry J. Kaymond, for the Austrian Mission, over ull next December. The decisive vore—23 to *—by which the matter was Iaid over, indi- cates sufficiently that the action of the Senate ‘Was conclusive for the session ————_ AT THE CAPITOL. } Secretary Stanton, Postmaster General Ran dall and General Grant were the Capitol this afiernoon, and the President is expected to be there during the closing hours of t! Tne reduc tion through tne waste of war was very heavy in the Souch, and in almost every State in the country the diminution was more or less marked.exceptin the item ofsheep. Indications of increased aitention to the breeding of farm Animals are now strong The fact is daily ba- coming more apparent that stock-growing is & more profitable branch of agricalture than | grain production, especia'iy im localities dis. tant from market. It 1s piain that markets t either be brought to these remote agti- tural sections, or farm products must be put in concentrated form, requiring light ex- nses for transportation in proportion tomar- SS jue. The report says:—The indications wheat crop are generally favorable. The ows of the past winter, and the general uni- formity of cold weather. prevented winter- killing tn a great degree. Thespring has been late, with less of alternate freezing and thaw- ing than usnal; and the young shoots, 1s a Tesult, look green vigorous. The Com- missioner recommends in view of the losses ot wool growerg from depredations of dogs, a national tax on every individual of the canine race in the several States. Three dollars, the English rate. would not be too high a tax, he thinks. ee Conrngot: ‘The offi canvass of the popular vore of Connecticut shows that 94,153 vo es were cast, which is 3,000 larger than was ever cast before. The majority of English. the Democratic candidate for Govercer, is 937. The net majority of the Democrats on Uongress- men is 1,394. The Hartford “ourant of yester- day morning say: ‘The Board of Canyassers met in this city yesterday, and commenced, but did not com- plete, its canvass of the votes cast at the State election.
