Curious Cause for Abandoninga id. There was a fuony case of elopementin Brooklyn ist weed, snd one of the Suaday papers bas cerved it up in the highly original and delicate style of which 1 gave youan example or two last week. It was io the shape ofa letter to her husband, in which, after declaring that she loved him (the forsaken) second cnly to ner “beloved Mon- tague,” (the takea) she goes on to say, of course in postscript, as follows Do you remember, darling, the evening we Bad those charming charades at Mrs. Brady’s, {the landlady of the boarding-house,)in which the Tyrant was played; you know we repre- sented the syllable ‘y by & marriage, in which 1 personified a bride, and my aear Montague the bridegroom; and then yon the horrid ron! by tearing about the stage id reciting a stapia piece of dreadful Fre: poetry! How ceuld you, when the whole rd tyrant was acted, take the part of Gessler, while my own Mentagne took that of the note William Tell ? On! 1 shall never forget how splendid he Jooked, with bis pants turned up to the top of bis boots, and my red opera cloak and plumed riding hatonhishead. Oh! how glorious was the burst of sentiment when his manly voice declared he would die for his country! My whole soul was filled with admiration, ana then and there I determined I should be his, and only bis. Why did you take such a ri- diculous part as Cock Robin in the « Babes in the Wood !"—yeu looked so silly bopping about the stage withtwo feather bruskes in your coat tail pocket! The forsaken husband, instead of being quiet about this aff@r, and consulting only his law- yer, has been running about the couatry show- ipg every one this letter. This should be ‘warning to young gentiemea, who ought not to take ridiculous parts in charades if their Jady-loves are also romantically disposed. William Tell is certainly more sublime than Cock Robin! rn A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY IN HAVANA.—In- tense excitement bas been created in Havana by the discovery of a terrible instance of rob- ery and murder on the person of a German pediar, named Mass. It appears that on the evening of the 30th ult. a man called at the house and proposed to Mass to accompany Bim to the Cerro Suburb, where, according to his statement, a dry goods merchant intended to dispote of bis stock at a great sacrifice. The wife begged ot him not to go, seeming to bave a presentiment that evil would befall ber Busband, but he only laughed at her fears, and after putting £1,000 in bills and about $150 in gold in his pocket. started out with the stranger. As Mr. Mass had not returned at 11 e’clock the wite became uneasy and inform- ed the police, but nothing was heard ofhim. The same evening & carriage with two men inside drove to the door of a hotel near the outskirts of the city and aszed for a room, at the same time informing the jandlord that they had a heavy trunk which they desired to leave, emselves going about town for a shert time, and that they would return at 11 o'clock The room was promised them and the trank placed in the entry, remaiuing there ail night, the men. however, not yet returning. On Sun- day afternoon some dogs ran in from the street, commenced smelling about the trunk and setting up a piteous howl. The attention ofthe people was drawn toward the trunk by the strange action of the dogs, and on raising the trunk to see if a rat was underneath the bottom of the trunk the floor was found to be covered with blood. The owner of the hotel now became aware that some terrible mystery ‘Was connected with the trunk, sent for the police, and when the trunk was opened, in presence of the authorities, the body of the unfortunate Mass. cut in several places so to put it in, was foundin it. In Brooklyn the house painters also asked for an advance from =} to =350aday. This the employers acceded to, but they refused the additional request for but eight hours’ work on Saturday, and the house ton still refuse to work. The railing lacksmiths and finishers in New York have determined to strike for an advance ef 50 cents a day wageson May Ist. They now receive trom $2 60 to =3 25 aday.
