“THE EVENING STA The Largest Cirenlation in the District W. D. WALLACH, Editer and Prepricter. WASHINGTON CITY : FRIDAY.........000 APRIL 12, 1867. * READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELBE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATT’ PROGRESS IN POLITICAL SENTIMENT ‘The recent elections which resulted in a defeat of the Repablicans serve, no less than those in which that party triamphed, to show the wonderful progress in political sentiment througbout theceantry during the last few years. Indeed the Democrats, in some sec- tions, have actually taken ground in advance of that occupied by & majority of the Union party afew years since. The Connecticat elecuon is a fair illustration of this fact ‘Thus, the Democratic party in that State, in conyention. six years ago, adopted a piattorm affirming the right or secession and denying the power of the Federal Government to co- erce @ rebellious State. How many votes | would they have received on these obsolete issues at the late election! So far have they progr d, since I*6}, that the principal re- commendations of English, their candidate for | Governor at the recent election, were the facts that he bad al ways condemned secession, and had voted to abolish slavery. The change of sentiment is not so general at the South where ideas make slower progress amorg the masses. but the leayen is working, | as shown not only by recent letters and speeches of public men, in that section and the temperate comments of the press on pub- lic affairs, Dut by the recognition at political Meetings of the claims of the colored man. Wohat flight of the imagination a few years since could bave compassed the fact that in the Spring of 1561 @ meeting of the prominent citizens of Charleston, South Carolina, em- bracing a large proportion of old Democrats | and original Secessionists would be held in which the black men would not ently take a part, but be allowed to run men of their own | color on the white man’s ticketfor members | $: of tae State Convention and Legislature. Yet this was the case at the meeting in thatcity on the 2d imstamt. Truly—the world does move. | THE M SIPPI_AND GEORGIA CASE, The cases of the Mississippi and Georgia petitions for injunction to prevent the exe- | cation of the military reconstruction bill were presented together in the Supreme Court, being argued firston the part of Mississippi by the counsel for that State. Attorney General | Stanberry made s powerful argument in oppo- | sition to the application and was followed by | Robert J. Walker on bebalf of the Mississipp: | injunction THE WHITE HOUSE ‘The health of the President is greatly im- | proved, and be is looking much better to-day. It being Cabinet day, no visitors were admit- ted. All the members of the Cabinet were present except the Attorney General, who was engaged in the Supreme Court.
