Subject :— Christian School.”* oat ae oF THe Firth Warp Re PUBLICAN OLUB.—In response wa published call, 4 large number of the voting residents of the Fitth Ward, without distmetion of color, assembied ast night in the Israel Churcn (Methodist), south of the Capitol. A goodiy number of members of other ward clubs (who did not participate) and several women were present. Mr > Brown called the meeting to order, ard Major E.G. Townsend was elected chair- man, and Wm. Brown secrotary. Mr. S. J. Brown stated the object of the Meeting to be to afford the citizens an oppor- tunity to consider a proposition to organize a Republican club in the ward. It was called atthe imsiance of the Republican Association ot the District, it having been determmed to organize ward associations suxiliary to the central association, for the purpose of effect- me orgsnization to cover the whole city. Mr. Brown explained the necessity for such organization in order to secure the harmonious ef the Republicans witkout d ction in all matters concerning the general ip which all were alike interested. Mr. Hunter. —* MEETING oF CLERKS.—A meeting of clerks in the various Departments was held last even- ing at Union League Hall, Mr. J. H. Brown im the chair, and J. U.S Burger secretary. Mr. J. W. Browning, from the committee to take into consideration the Propriety of form- img & permanent society of clerks, stated the committee had not been able to meet, and were therefore unable to maze a report. Mr. J. H. Brown, from the committee to as- certam what boarding-bouse keepers had raised their prices, stated that several mem- bers of the committee were not present, and ho report could be made. Mr. K. submitted a constitution and by-laws for an organization of clerks, the consideration of which was post- poned until the next meeting. The object of the association is to promote the best interests of all and for mutual benefit of the members The ttle of the association is to be « The De- partment Clerks’ Union.” Mr. Browning said his object in calling the first meeting wns to acknowledge to Congress the thanks of the clerks for their action on the increase of compensation. There was a demurrer by the coun. sel for the road to tt evidence, on the ground that there was no pr of to go before the jary showing the existence of any such ee any asthe Alexandria and Washington road Company, or that any such company were en- gaged tn operating the road tn which the nais- ance Was alleged to bave arisen during the pe- riod of time covered in the indictment. Lee, charged with stealing about $4,000 7-30 and 5-20 bonds from the loan branch of the Treasury Offiee, in this “ae ee the 20th of January, was arrested at the Planters’ House, in St. Louis, yesterday morning, under the as_ sumed name of ©. Miller. He was arrested by Major Gozzens, United Staves detective. He baa in bis trank $33,000 of the bonds and $4,0:4) tm greenbacks. Lee at first denied the theft, but subsequently acknowledged it.
