After the result bad been announced, the prisoner briefly addressed ihe court, strongly asserting his innocence of the erlme for which he had been convicted. Jndge Kuseell then wrote the sentence of im- prisonment for hfe on the back ef the indict- ment and handed it tothe clerk. Justas the clerk was about to read it, Orne drew a knife, which he had in some way concealed in his sleeve, and stabbed himself three times in the left breast. He remained standing for nearly 4 minnte. and then he sank down into the dock partia‘ly unconscious, He was immediately carried to the Counselior’s room and Jaid upon the table, where an examination of the wounds was made by Dr. Taylor. Orne was then car- ried on a stretcher to the sick room at the jul, where he lay ata late hour Iact evening in a critical condition, with but little chances of recovery. While being conveyed to the jail, he said that be didn’t care so muck about go- ing to the State Prison, for he knew all about it, but he would never go there innocent. He expressed no regret whatever for his act. Orne is about thirty years old, and a native of Mal- den, and has a wife and child living in Charlestown. He bas served four years in the State Prison for arson and a year in the House of Correction for robbery.—Boston Voice. Unper THE Ban.—It is a curious fact, that in the recent elections in Prussia, Count Bis- marck and the five generals who have received national rewards for their conduct of the recent war. have all been defeated by candidates be- longing to the liberal party. Thus Count Bis- marck bas had to yield to Herr Waideck, the ¢emocratic member of the Supreme Uourt of Appeal. Gen. von Roon to Herr Lasker. an assistant judge; Gen. yon Moltke to Herr Wig- gers, a lawyer, who spent three years in prison for his presumed share in the escape of Dr Kintel; Gen.ven Falckenstein to Herr Dancker. the publisher of the Volks’ Zeitung; Gen. you Herwath to Herr Schulze, the founder of the Jaboring men’s saving bank; and Gen von Stemmetz to Herr Rinage, a municipal officer of advanced opinions. The inference from this decision of the people is—that, nothwith- standing the military glory achieved by the genersls in question, their well-known incli- mation towards arbitrary domestic measures, since the war was over, has inspired distrust of them, and distrust bas placed them under the ban.—New York Express. ———— iin A SWINDLE ON TRE COLORED PorvULaTion.
