THE EVENING STAR. | 4 Young Husband Shoots His Wife and -im- Law. (From the Pittsburg® Unronicle, Jap. 4th.) About five o'clock yesterday afternoon terribie shooting affair occurred on Tayt avenue, near Pasture Lane, 2d ward, Alle- gheny, which Mr. Henry Strong was prob- aad hie daughter Koss seri ly @ partico of this sad affair, so far os we have been able to ascertain them, areas follows: Rosa was lying sick in an uppet room. A young man named Rose called atthe Bouse yerterday afternoon, and on invitation of ber mother, visited Rosa im her room. Sbortly after a young man named Jacob Baltz- beller, who Dad been secretly married to Rosa im June last, and who resides in Wheeling, entered the apartment and was welcomed by the invalid withakiss. She presently com- ——— of having cold feet, and asked fora lanket. Mrs. Strong and Kose then went down stairs to the parior. Ina few moments a@scream was heard, apparently coming from Rosa’s room. Mr. Strong, who was sittiog in a lower room, rushed to stairs, and had just placed his band upon the banister as his daughter came rushing down, followed to the Dead of the staire by itzbeller, who imme- diately firea three shots from a revolver. The first shot struce the daughter, passing through the left shoulder and inflicting a pashful flesh wound. The second missed, and the third struck Mr. Strong im the cavity of the chest, near the lungs. He fell, apparently de: Drs. Hamilton and Buchanan were called nd soon restored him to consciousness. not ascertained ther his lungs are in. of not, but atail events there is hardly a p: sibility of bis recovery. Baltzbeller fied ence, but a cry ef murder was raised, and hi ‘was pursued and captured near the peniten- tary, and placed in the lock-up. eisa young man about twenty-six years of age, a ofa very prepossessing appearance. He states that be visited bis wife some two weeks since for the purpose of taking her to Wheeling with bim, but her parents refused to let her go. He agam arrived in Allegheny at fear o'clock Jesterday afternoon, and proceeded directly io the house. With reference to the shooting, Bnd causes leading thereto, he is reticent. He Was evidently beut on mischief when he vis- ited the house, or he would not Bave armed himself with a heavy revolver, of Colt’s navy atent, with which the shooting was done. enry Strong, the injured man, fas made an information for felonious assault and battery Sgainsthim before Mayor Merrison, and he Will propadly have a hearing tais after- noon, when additional particulars will be de- veloped. Kore declines to state wha: occurred in the room after her mother lett, and previous to the sheoting, but of course the examina- tion wild draw itout. The affair isa sad one, and thus iar almost entirely involved in mys- tery. | Fornien ImMigRaTION.—The aggregate in- crease of the population of tne United States from this source during the last year is 233,416. Of these, 215,{25 are from Germany and the British Isles— 4,716 being Germans, 63,047 Irish, 36,18 English, 4,979 Scoteh—represent- ing, At & moderate average, an actual accession of wealth to the country of €107.964,000. With the continuance of domestic tranquillity the tide of emigration from these parts is certain to become larger and larger. Considering, in- deed, the troubied aspect which things are as- euming in Europe generally, and the excite- ment which is inseparable from the reform and Fenian movemeuts in Great Britain, we are warranted to infer that the number of immi- grants daring the year on which we haveen- tered will be unusually large. Inquiries made on the subject convince us th e balk of these immigrants go westward — nambers eetciing particularly in Minnesota and Wiscon- sin. It is consoling to know that the burdens imposed upon bead fee by jate rebellion are wot aggravated by a decrease of the popu- intion. The great West is able to receive and provide for unlimited numbers: ana if the Southern States were brought intosuch a con- dition as to eneourage trade and industry, the advantages offered by ‘he country to indus. tre and thrifty emigrants would be increased dred fold.—New York Herald. The bet- ter to perform this labor of love she assumed the dress of an ajd-de-camp. At the battle of Waterloo she hastily jumped into a wagon of the (jeneral s, where her mother bappened to be. saved her by presenting one of the pistols she carried at the officer of ordnance, and threatened to blow out his brains if he per- sisted in his traitorous intention of leading teem to the enemy under the pretext of a false order of the Generai.
