Plant at the cor- ner of New York avenue and 15th street, is now so nearly completed that it will soon be in full use for Government offices, the “Na- thonal Despitary," &e. The superb store-room fronting on New York avenne, was coustructed especially for a first-class grocery for the use ot Messrs. G. A. Hall and A.©. Piant. These gentlemen bring to their business ali the elements of success. Mr. Hall, by his efficiency in business matters in Washington, and more recently by the suc- cess with wbich he carried on important busi- hess operations in New Orleans, has gained a favorable name for tact and energy. Mr. Plant is the son of Mr. George H. Plant, andis a genuine “chip of the old block” in business capacity. The store is one of the largest and best arranged im the city, being 115 feet deep, and having a rearentrancetfor the introduction of goods. The spacious cellars are under- drained and floored with solid flag-stones, and afford ample storage room for the very lurge stock of heavy groceries, wines, liquors, &c., Isid mm. Messrs. Hall & Plaat propese to deal in rothing but first-class goods, and their stock is perhaps the finest ever opened in tbis city. The-r display of teas, for imstance, surpasses in extent ana variety that of most of the tea “Hongs” that make teas a speciality. In sugars, coffees, aud all the finer groceries, the same superiority is noticed. In the way of canned fruits aud table delicagivs neraliy their stock is especially appetizing. t is very much to the ad vantage of customers that the Inte decline in wholesale prices has enabled Messrs. Hall & Plant to purchase on terms that wil] enabie them to sell first-class goods at lowrates. A grocery ot this class has been very much needed in that locality. In the early part of the evenmng a number of Chinese lanterns were pended about the pond, but the wires of ma: broke, and it was found impossible to keep them in place. A number of large ian- terns with reflectors were placed around the pond, and added greatly to the beauty of tne scene. Many of the skaters appeared in quaint and gaudy costumes, attracting the attention of, And many of them causing great amuse- ™ among the visitors. Among those in costume we! maomber as Indians, with al! the feathers and paint; Old Santa Clans, Oid Mother Hubbard, Brother Jonathan, with bie huge white hat; Hamlet, several as clowns and jesters, and a large number with comical and queer-jocking costumes, masks, &c., pre- senting ascene of unusual gayety and pleas- ure. The Marine Band was im attendance, and performed many excellent pieces of music during the —— it is thought that at least two thousand jes and gentlemen visited the pond during the afterncon and evening. The carnival was kept up until near midnight, And all retired well pleased ‘with the evening's entertainment. Tux Stay J.aw— Interesting Legal Question. — The Alexandria Gazette etgniaasonee [—A very interesting legal queation arose in a case im the county court of this county yesterday, growing out of the “stay Jaw.” Barley & ‘Triplett being lebted, before the war, io a firm in New York to the amount of some $500 oF $608, compromised the claim by executing their note for $200, payable on the ist of Jan- uary, 1866, with endorsers to secure its pay- ment. This note not bemg paid at maturity, the firm brought suit upon the note, and ob. tained judgment against the endorsers, and is- sued an execution thereon, which execution the defendants moved to quash, as Raving been issued Im contrayention of the « stay law.” The question was ly argued by Messrs. Smoot and Brent in favor of the mo- ton and Messrs. Willoughby and Beach against a. The argu ‘t was interesting and in, nious, Involving, we believe, ter the first time, the true construction of section 3 of the stay law of 1566, a tion of great importance to debtors in this State who have compromised their debts The coert refused to qeash the *xecution, and decided that it was a new debt, And Was not affected by the stay law. — Gao Tue U.
