They have Bot paesed im business transactions in Halumore for months past. ‘The statietics collected by the Preedmen’s Bureaa show adimination in the namber of negroes in Virginia and in other border States, nd an iperr a-e in certain of the cotton States. This diminution is said to be marked and striking in Virginia. The Reckingbam Register says: Our farm- *rs generally bave salted down their pork, preferring to dothis teselling at present prices, There bas been a large quantity thue disposed of intely. One Sanday, after the aftermoon service, as the bread in the sacra- ment was being handed round by the persons appointed, one of the trustees seized the plate and requested to be aliowed to fill the office bimee!f, but this was objected to, and a straggie ensued. The trustee, who succeeded in getting possession of the plate, tendered the bread to some of the commonicants. Another trastee, after the gas had been lighted, turned it off at the meter. causing the congregation to disperse; and having secured the key, be walked off. In tbe evening the cpapel gates were broken open, and a reward has since been offered for the discovery of the author of the outrage. On Wednesday one of the gentiemea above referred to, with the belp of four men, carried away from the place a number of benches and two tables, thus causing much imconvenience to the meeting which was Reid that evening. Similar disturbances took place some fourteen years ago, which resulted in the then minister of the place committing self-destruction. How To Prorose.—A party ofiadies and gentlemen were laughing over the supposed awk ‘dness attending a declaration of love, when agentieman remarked that ifever he offered bimself he would doitina collected and business-like manner. For instance,” he continued, addressing @ lady present, “Miss Smith, lbave beentwo years looking for a wile. 1am in receipt of about three bundred a year, which ison the increase. (fall the ladies of my sequaintance I admire you the most; m- deed, I nad aor and would gladly make yon my wife.” -You flatter me by your preferenc: good-bumoredly replied Miss Smith, to the su prise of atl present; «1 refer youto my father.” «Bravo! exclaimed the gentlemen. “Weill, I declare!’ said the ladies, in a chorus. The Jady and gentleman, good reader. were mar- ried soon after. Wasn’t that a modest way of *‘coming to the point,” and a lady-like method of taking & m&n at bis word? CHARCOAL FOR Farts: Turkeys.—«I Rave made an experimen says & writer, “in feeding charcoal to fattening turkeys. and the result surprised me. Four turkeys were con- fined in a pen and fed on meal. boiled pota- toes, and oats. Four others of the same brood Were also, at the same time, confined in an- other pen and fed on the same articies, but ‘witb one pint of very fine pulverized charcoal mixed with their food—mixed meal and boiled tatoes. They bad also a plentiful supply of roken charcoal in their pen. The eight were killed on the same day, and there was a differ- ence of one And a half pounds each in favorof the fowls which had been supplied with the ebarcoal, they beiog much the fatter, and the meat greatly superior in point of tenderness and flavor.” Se Is Crixoiine Doouep!—The New York ‘Writers upon fashion are felicitating them- selves upon the impression thai the collapse ef crimoline is coming, because the prone- BAdes in that city show thatthe circumference of ladies’ skirts 1s contracting, and neat, trim dresses Gre taking the place of the immense expansion that not long ago threatened te arive male passengers from the sidewalks into the cartways. New York, however, is always Pprophecying, and this may be one of its many false predictions; for crimotine has been “doomed,” &ccording to report, quite often Guring the past few years. Expand or con- tract as the skirts , the ladies in this mat- ter are the masters, Hiid they will most prob- ably cling fondly to crinoiine, as an old friend that bas long stood by t —Phila. Ledger. When struck by the cow catcher it was thrown upon the plat. form in snch & position that its head was fas- teped oncer one of the bars that hold the cow = to the engine, which prevented its fall- ing off. A Mageiace on Horserack.—The Wythe- Ville (Va.) Dispatch retates tne following: “A couple came in town last Wednesday, rode up to Parson Sallins’ house. and said they de. sired to be joined in the holy state of wea- jock. The parson kindiy invited them to dis- mount and come iu, but they dectined, saying Ume was precious, and urged the parson to push on immediately with the ceremony, which He ¢id. in the best manner, ‘in doubie quick ume, front of Dis house, the snow falting rapidly atthe time. For the benefit of such we append the following recipe for making whis- ky, which was brought to light in the recent seizure of the New York distilleries. It is as tollows:—“To forty galions common whisky add thirty gallons water. five gations tincture Guinea pepper, one quart tincture of itery, two ounces of acetic ecber, one and a Baitgal: Jons of strong tea, and toree ounces pulverized ebarecoal.” We publish the above for the benefit of any Who may wish to manufacture their own Ppoi- son.— Warrenton Sentinel. —$$<$—$______ Tae UNFULFILLED PRorneEctes.—Now that 1567 bas dawned upon us. the Second Ad vent- ism followers must be very much chop-fatien. ‘The year just closed, they argued, would wit- hess an end of all things here below without fail. While assisting to chop & huge pine, which had just been felled, A sappling, which bad seen caught and borne dower by the falling tree, sprung to a perpen- dicular position again, hurling a broken imdb which had been caught in its boughs with the force of a ball from a cannon. THE EVENING STAR. | _ ) [The Fenians. STEPEBNS APYLICTED WITH COWARDIOR. From ap early bour.this morning the head- quarters of ex-C. O. 1. R. Stephens in (nat. | bam street were crowded in every part by members of the Fenian organization, who re- | mained away from their employments in or- a@er to hear trom the lips of 1 officiating clerks that the « oss,’ as he was called, was OF was not a traitor. As soon as the trath was known the clatter of tongues,:and impreca- tions-were fearful to listen to. All the men who bad been imstrumental in introducing Stephens. and collecting tundscn the strength | of the same, were denoanced with an earo- | estness very much calculated to affdet their | nervous system, if they had only been within | ear-shot. H In the excitement of the moment $20 bonds were held aloft for an instant. and then thrust over the gas until their identity was lost. One man was louder in denunciation than the rest, He said he wouid sooner skiver James Ste- phens, “Killian Dorian,” or John O'MaBony, than Sir Robert Peel, or Lord John, (Earl Russell.) It he could only get a sight of Ste- hens, he would skiver him hke a rat, and he ‘lieved that there were not twelve men in rhe country ready to find him guilty of murder for doing such a service to humanity. In the midst of all theexcitement. General” Gleeson issues from «he private apar'ment occasionally as it were to quiet the troubled elements. He answers all inquirers that James Stephens was only afflicted with cowardice , that the organization was in a perfect con- dition, and would not suffer an iots because of the baseness of the quendam Omief Organizer. Through the day telegrams were pouring ia from every part of the country asking if Ste- phens was or was not ip the United States. If answers bereturned to a]l the commanicatious there will be a considerable drain on the Fenian exchequer.— N. Y, Express. A SNAKE Five Freer Lona Mixes a Cow. A gentleman in the lower part of this city has asplendid milch cow. She ordinarily gives Irom two to three gallous ata milking. Itisa remarkable fact that, for the last two months, she has given more milk in cold weather than im warm. When the weather is cold, her milk is abundant, but when it moderates her supply is reduced down, frequently to less than & quart. This remarkable freak attracted the notice of the owner, several weeks ago, and ever since he has been sedulously trying to divine the cause., At first he thonght she was milked by other parties than members of his family, but as the cow was confined ina Jot adjoining his residence and watched, he became satisfied that no person other than some one of his family milked her. During the recent extreme cold weather her milk was abundant. but yesterday (the weath- ear baving become very much moderated) she failed entirely. This morning he was upearly, determined, if possible, to learn the cause of the failure. He had hardly entered the cow- yard before his attention was attracted toa rastling poise in some chunks near the stable. Presently he saw a huge snake emerge from underneath the stable and craw! up to bis ta- vorite milker and deliberately begin stripping her teats. The snake was at least five feet lang, and as large as a man’s arm at the shoul- der. ‘It was what is known a cow snake. The mystery was now explained. In cold weather the snake lies dormant, hybernating, but when the weather gets warm he emerges from bis winter quarters. The gentleman at- tempted to kill the snake, but failed. It ran back under the stable, where it now securely hes gorged with its favorite beverage. The gentleman who relates this snake story is ope of our most respectable citizens, and vouches for its truth.__New Albany (Ind.)
