Itis believed that the negro who shot Mrs. Aaren Ward in Newark, N. J., on New Year's night, has been arrested. @His name is George Brown. A portion of the property wken from Mr. Ward’s store was recovered from him. A daring wagetinly’ Eikeged took place Thars- day evening near West Hoboken, New Jersey. E.B. Weather clear, in Richmond, and the snow and ige are both fast disappearing. Both river and canal navigation will probably be re- sumed on Monday. Brownsville papers of December 23 make n° mention of the death of Escobedo.and the report is evidently unfounded. Canales will go to Tampico, proclaiming Ortega by the way. Glycerine and its Uses. This article is among the comparatively re- cent discoveries of science. Giycerime, in a pure state, is a ciear, colorless, syrapy liquid, of a very sweet taste, being the sweet principle contained in oil and fatty bodies. Its first in- troduction into medical use wasin the year 1644, in the Loncon Hospital, for diseases of the skin; it keeps the same mvist and soft, and excludes the air witbout evaporation. The Russians apply it to the face and ears as & pro- tection against intense cold. as it does not co! geal at any temperature In ophthalmic sur- gery, frequentand extensive use is made of glycerine, also in certain conditions of deaf- ness. It may be urea asan adjuvantto the bath, softening the skin pleasantly, and has a high reputation as a lotion for the complex- ion; but for all these purposes it should be per- fectly pure. it was not known in a pure state until the discovery of Mr. R. A. Tilghman, of Philadelphia, patented in iss4. There aretwo manufacturers who make the best and purest article—one in London, and the other, of equal celebrity, in Philadelphia In the arts, the uses of glycerine are mani- fold in keeping the colors of organic bodies: in photography, to keep pictures in an unfiaished State. At the museam of the Faeulty of Medi- cine at Paris, glycerine bas been recently adopted as a preservative fluid for flowers aud tresb plants. Mr. Tichborne has thus kept flowers for two years, and then made from them a water, with a perfame equal to that ot the flowers of the season. Mustard may be kept for any length of time by its admixture Manufacturers of chewing tobacco find it val- uable in maintaining the softness of their pro- ducts, while imparting sweetness to the taste, Frequent efforts have been made to use gly- cerine in the manufacture of toilet soaps, but without snccess until quite a recent period, when avery beautifal article has been pro- duced.—Phila. Ledger. St. THOMAS’ MANOR AND THE CHAPEI. AND THE CHURCH AT CHAreL Potnt, Mp, De- STROYED BY FirE.—We regret to learn that the ancient colonial manor-house of St. Thomas’ Manor, at Chapel Point, Charles county, Md, together with its old chapel and more modern charch edifice connected with it, have been destroyed by fire, the particulars of which we have not learned. The manor-bouse was built, we believe, in 1733, or thereabouts, and the chapel contained a relic of the times when Maryland was not as tree in matters of con- science as ber founders made her, for from it, to a neighboring valley, there was a secret subterranean passage for the escape of the priest if surprised bythe agents of the law while celebrating mass. Had the buildings been fully insured, the loss of so fine a speci- men of colonial architecture, and so interesting & memorial of colonial times, would bave been & great loss to the people of the country and the State; bat there was not a cent of insarance on the thousands of its value, and as so large and elegant a mansion is not now needed at that point, St. Thomas, as 4 seat of baronial hospitality, is probably numbered with the things of the past.—Alez. Gazette. A MAN SHoots a Woman AccIDENTALLY AND SUBSEQUENTLY Becomes a Maniac.—On Thursday afternoon, at about 3 o'clock, a most distressing case of accidental shooting occur- Ted at the laundry building No. 139 Hudson street. It appears that twoof the employees of the establishment named Henry Leslie and Anna Agnew, were engaged in a conversation when the former pulled a revoiver from his coat pocket, and pointing it in the direction of the girl. playfully remarked that he would shoot her, or something to that effect, when one of the chambers were discharged and the con- tents lodged in the girl's shoulder. She fell to the floor with a loud scream, and at the same moment Leslie fell also in a swoon, fiom which he did not recover for nearly an hour When his consciousness returned he ventured to ask tor Anna, when cne of the other giris ‘who isemployed on the premises thoughtlessiy Answered, “she is dead.’ Upon hear ng these words he at once became a raving maniac, and so continued when last heard from. Itis feared by the page that his reason will not re- turntohim. The wounded girl was conveyed to the City Hospital, where her injuries were pronounced severe, although not likely to prove fatal. At last accounts she was as com- How To Inpuce EMIGEATION.—It is stated | fortable as could be expected.—V. F. Times thata farmer of Tyrreii county, in this State, being possessed of & large estate, and not being able to obtam labor, adopted the following plan to indnee jaborers to cultivate it. He measured off ten lots of fifteen or twenty acres each, and built plain but comfortable cottages upon them. He then wentto New York and easily obtained ten good men with families. having offered to settle them upon his estate upon the following conditions :—Taey were to work for him ata fixed val jon for their services for four days ineach week until their wages amounted to the value of their lots of land with the houses thereon. The other two days they worked on theirewn account and this time was ample to cultivate whatever they could raise, the employer furnishing the teams they needed on those days. These were the chief points in the en; ment. The resultof this contract was that the farmer's lands were better worked, and with less trouble to him than they bad ever been, and he never made such crops before.— Wilmington (N. C.) ASap Story.—The report of a coroner's inquest brings to light some startling tacts connected with the means by which a large class of London work ple strive to get a living. Aman named Hone, and bis four chil- dren, who followed the occupation of artificial flower makers, had an extensive order for wreaths of artificial flowers for one of the Christmas pantomimes. Night and day for 96 hours had these poor people stuck to their work, 50 48 to have it ready in time; and this the father states, he has been trequently com- pelled to do, in order to earn bread for his jamily. At the ciose ot the fourth day their labors were suddeuly puta stop to by the up- setting of a candle, which simple accident re- sulted in the burning to death of one of the unfortunate man’s children. and the destruc- tion of the whole fruits of the 96 hours’ con- stant work. = * CrepvuLity.—The Nashville Banner learns “on good authority” that a gentieman who was recently identified very prominently with the oil interests of Tennessee, and who held a bigh command in thé federal army during the war, lost over fifty thonsand dollars by loca- ting wells under the direction of «‘water” or “oil witches.” So implicit was his belief in this ridiculous superstition of the nineteenth century that he was compelled to return home an utter bankrapt.” &7The British government recently invited the Pope to take refuge in Malta should he leave Rome. FALL OF CRINOLINE.—T wo years ago any- body who had said that crinoline would go out of fashion, and that stock in the companies by which it was manufactured would cease to be & good investment, would have been consider- ed a crotchety cynic. The fashion seemed set- tled. The eye had become accustomed to the pyramidal configuration which a woman pre- sented in the street and the drawing-room as the female form divine. Seatsin all public places were, or ought to have been widened, to fit the expan loveliness. The wonder was that Venus herself, born as she was trom the sea, did not bring with her some of the whalebone of the element from which she s in order to shape herself according to ideal of beautiful form. But now the thing bas collapsed. The fashion in Paris at this moment is @ dress which fits close to the body, and having a train behind. Queen Crinoline bas had a sudden fail as King Cotton, with small hope of being reconstruct- ed. “The thing of beauty” was not tobe a “joy forever,” and Fashion's “noblest pro- duct’ was not to be «its last.”—Bostow. In this list, representing $13,000,000 of capital, only three have their capital unimpaired by losses, and they have only Asurplus of about $79,000, on a capital of about $1, 000. As an offset to this it must be remembered that the insurance companies bave until recently, been making large gains, and tbat their present capitals represent earn- ings declared on stock dividends. aoaeerieenet-meeierrersai- 82To lose & pocket-book containing green- backs ts oe if womaa cuts her nails every Monday, itis lucky—for her husband S7-The Connecticut River is frozen over be- low Hartiord, and the heaviest teamscross the ice in safety. When death ensues the hair becomes brittle, and cannot be curled and twisted into form. Marseilles is the great entrepot for the trade in buman hair, more than 40,000 pounds weight of this commodity being imported there annually, chiefly trom Italy, and more partic- ularly trom Sicily, Naples. amd the States of the Church, while a moderate quantity comes from Spain and certain departments of France. The French provinces which yield the largest supply are Brittany and Auvergne, and bay- ers go round on market days, when the youug demoiseile who wishes to dispose of her locks mounts & wine cask, and. loosening ber head- Cress, showers down ber hair. An active bid- ding follows. As the weight of bair im an ordi- nary chignon does not exceed three ounces and a half, the annual quantity imported into Mar- seilles slone would besuffictent for upwards of 180,000 bead-dresses. A large quantity of the bair arriving at this port is there made ap and re-exporied to Algeria and Spain. The hair-dressers of Marseilles, allof whom are more or less engaged the chignon trade, are something like 400 in number. RalLroap Ri@sTs.—A gentleman trav. in the West, lately put to the test one o} exercises of “discretionary power” which conductors in general are apt to carry to an extreme. He had purchased a first-class ticket. There were but two cars in the train— one for smoking and one for Isdies. The gen- tleman im question having no travelling com- Ppsnion of the tender sex, was directed by the brakeman to go into the smoking car. He re- TRonstrated, and demanded a first-class seat for his first-class ticket. The conductor being appealed to, sustained the brakeman; and the traveller refusing to give up his ticket till he had received the equivalent demanded, bech officials combined to forcibly eject him from the tram. The gentieman immediately made his way back to the office of the railroad com- pany, and the managers made the amende hon- oroble by paying him liberally for his lost tim: dismissing tbe offending conductor, and pre- mulgating to all its employees thesensible role that lirst-class tickets convey @ right to firs: - class seats. To Licht a Dark Koow.—The Loadon Buiider recommends a plan for lighting « dark room in which the darkness is caused hy its being situated on a narrow street or lane The Builder says if the glass of a window in such a room is placed several inches within the outer face of the wall,as fs the general custom in building houees, it will admit very litle light, that which it gets bemg only the reflection from the walls of the Opposite houses. If, however, for the window be sub- Stituted another in which all the panes of glass are roughly ground on the outside, and flush with the outer wall, the light from the whole of the visible sky and from the re- motest parts of the opposite wall will be in- troduced into the apartment, reflected from the innumerable faces or facets which the rougb grinding of the giass has produced. Tne whole window will appear as if thesky were beyond it, and from every point of this lamin- ous surface light will radiate ito all parts of the room. eens WaRMTH AND VENTILATION.—There is no Adyantage, as to health, in sleeping in a very cold room, cold enough to have ice formed in it during the night. Thousands of persons who have gone to bed in B ge health at morning with night baye waked up in * pneumonia,” thatis inflamation of the lungs, Sud bave died in a few days, becanse the room Was too cold for them; to say nothing of the debilitating effect of breathing an atm: ere more or less loaded with carbonic acid gas, which deprives the system of its ability to Tesist the approach of disease.
