W ave his name as Nye, appeared at the i mg bonse of Mr. Park, on © street, betwee Ja and 3d streets, with a young lady he represented as his wife, and asked to « the rooms. The keeper ‘of the house showed the pair several rooms, and finally they chose tbe back parior, into which the young mon had a prano placed for the lady. and s« they were living quite comfortably ‘The young man, as aiso the lady, informed the er ocew pants of the house that they hadre- iy been married, and that he being a mail ni, couldn't be home during the day. He peared to be very regular in his habits, and bome every evening, and in a sbort ey were looked upon by their fellow- fers as quite &n acquisition. Christmas times came, and the couple mixed with the nh thé amusements gotten up in the and seemed to enjoy the tan amazing- on New Year's eve there came a change. ‘The occupants of the house had mostly re- ured sbout 19 o'clock, not feeling inclined “to wateb the New Year in”—but were destined to Bave precious little sleep. Aboat il o’eluck the jingling of the door bell awoke some of the Oceupents. and the servant found at the door ® stout middle-aged lady, accompanied by an able-bodied young’ man. They imformed the servant that the lady was the mother and the gentleman the brother of Mrs Nye, who they wished to see, and asked which was the room of the couple. The ser- vant de‘grated the room in question, and started up steirs, but bad not gone many steps before screams of “murder” from the room awoke the house. The proprietor, Mr. Park, sprung ont of bed and hastily attempted te cbange his night-sbirt tor thicker apparel, but the irequency of the eries and the din from the Toom induced him to disregard ail Iaws ef eti- quette, and down stairs he went to the room in question, followed by some of the boarders. Here they found that Mr. and Mrs. Nye had teen bauled from bed, the former by the big brother and the latter by the mother of the lady. The young man was walking into Mr N. with & stout stick, which he used mostly on bis victim's head, and he finding discretion the better part of valor, made a break for the window, carrying the greater portion of she window-sash with bim, and took refugein the stable. While this was going on the mother bad her daughter over her knee and was ap- plying raw bide to raw hide, giving her, i the language of a-witness, “ Hail Colampia.” ‘The spectators thinking that there should be moderation im all things, interposed and siopped this castigation, and heard the expia- mh tions of the parties, from which it appeared that the daughter had been recently marridd to & gentleman in New York, and had run away from him and came here, taging up with Mr, Nye, who bad been a former lover. The mother and son were induced to leave the bouwgg, and the danghter retired to bed, suffering smartly from tbe effects of the cow- hiding, and Mr. Nye came out of bis hiding place in the stable after the coast was clear. The trouble was not all over yet, however, and in about an hour there was another ring of the door bell. The servant was admonished to be careful who she let in, and opened the door ajar, when the former visitors pushed forcibly past ber, and immediately went to the room of Mr.and Mrs. Nye, when the brother dragged the former from the bed and gave him another tremendous whacking, continuing to apply the stick until he was stopped by the pro- prietor of the bonse and boarders, who went to the rescue. At this visit the mother did net use the bide, but while the son was attack- ing Nye, gave the daughter 4 terrible tongue lashing. As before, the boarders requested them to leave the Rouse, which invitation they finally complied with. On turning at- tion to the mjured man, they found that he was bacly cut, and took bim to a neighboring drug store, where his wounds were dressed. The followimg morning, the young couple Goubtiess thinking that their quarters were getting too bot for them, quietly teft the Rouse, and the following day their was sent for by the porter of a hotel; the piano being Jeft as security for the board bill. ———¢—— ALEXANDRIA anv KiveR News —We ctip the following items from the Alexandria papers of yesterday afternoon: Last night perfected communication between the Maryland and the Virginia shores.
