Orme im the chair, and Mr. T. B! Mohun. secretary. The Chair laid before the meeting a letter trom the friends of the measure in New York, urgmg thet the stocaholders here at once ©Tgan ze. without waiting for the whole amount of the $50,000 to be subscribed. They state that they wiil adhere to the arrangement made with tbe Washington ople, giving the latter a majority of the directors, tne president, and treasurer, without waiting for the balance of 0.000, for the purpose of getting to work at as the fall and winter are the best por- s of the year for the freighting busines: With the 55,000 from Washington and wi has been raised in New York, two first-c! ers may be purchased, and the third may purchased when the balance of stock is dis. posed of. They request that 2 committee from Washington meet them at the Continental, Poiladelphia, to-day, and m New York after- wards, to consummate arrangements and pro- ceed to work. Mr. J. W. Thompson reported that the com- Mi ttee on subscriptivns bad obtaimed something over $50,000. Doubts having been expressed ss to the liabilities assumed py stockholders under the hability clanse in the New York Steamship Law, be had brought with him a copy of the law which be proceeded to read. Jt was shown that much less liability was as- sumed under the New York law than under be lnw under which companies are organized tn this District. A conversational debate was engaged in which a doubt was expressed as to the power Of the trustees named in the charter to resign, 3nd it was suggested that anew charter be ob- ned with thenames ofthe Washington stock- ders inserted. Was also suggested, in view of the clause quiring a majority of he directors to be resi- sts of New York, that the Washington stock- ders could elect some citizen of that place to represent them, and thus have a majority of the Board. Mr. Thompson, to test the sense of the meet- ing. moved the appointment of a commitice to proceed to New York and ascertain whatar- | Tangement could be made. Mr. Samuel Bacon said that it would be first becessary to haye an understanding with the subscribers, as the subscriptions had been made with the understanding thar $20,000 was to be raised. They could not be beld to pay the amounts they had subscribed unless the whole amount was raised. The Chair (Mr. Orme) beld the same opinion | as Mr. Baccn. He thonght it impossible fo the beers ips J to succeed unless it nad the co- operation of Georgetown The merchants on W ater street had failed to give them any en- coursgement, and unless they wonld give the steamers back freight the line would not pay. Alexandria was not in ¢ondition tw give back freights, and it was well known that but little could be sent from Washington. Mr. A. R. Shepherd said that if the line was putin operation, the merchants must avail mselves ofit. It would be the oniy desira- e freighting line within their reaeh. Rail- freights were too high to come in compe- & with it, and the canal line was clo:ed during the winter months, and the steamship dine could make the trips in half the time, and carry freight at half the expense of the caual line. The qvestion about the directorship was nol Material. The president was the contrell- ing officer, and if we have the president and the treasurer here we were sure of the voa- trolling influence. Mr. Thompson said that the first steamship lime between bere and New York always had more back freight than they conid take, and Georgetown millers were obliged te send their flour by schooner, against their will. That steamship line reslized 40 per cent. per herd during the two yearsthey were running. That dine was unable to take the immense amount of cotton and other products coming to Alex- andria by ‘he Tennessee road. This class of freight now found its way to Norfolk, for shipment by & much more curcuitous route. He was satisfied that if not a dollars worth of freight was obtained in Georgetown that the vessels could be abundantly supplied eise- where. Let us not by failing in thisenterprise draw upon us afresh the stigma that we are not willing to help ourselves. He was will- ing to double his subscription if ethers wonld do the same, rather than the project should fail Mr. ———— offered the following resolu. ton, which was adopted: Resolved, That & committee of five be ap- pointed by the Chair, who shalt proceed to New York and obtain sach information as may b- needed, with a view to the organization of the steamship company, under the present act of incorporation, and if in their view a safe course would be to organize under anew ¢har- ter, to obtain an act of incorporation. placing as trustees such principal subscribers to the Stock as may seem best, with such other safe. guards as may be for the interests of our stock- bolders; and the committee are further anthor- ized to procure such information as regards the steamers now for sale in Philadelphia or New York as they may be able, and to report their action at an adjourned meeting, before concluding any arrangement that would be binding on the Distriet subscribers. The following were appointed the commit- tee contemplated by the resolation, viz Messrs. J. W.Thempson, A. R. Shepherd. Wm. Wall. qof Wall & Stephens,) S. Bacon, and J. B. Bryan. The stockholders then adjourned to meet agam on Tuesday evening next. erwiiicertes ALEXANDRIA ITEMs.—Mr. Joseph Brager, who keeps @ clothing store on King street, near the wharf, was robbed Monday evening, bya negro, of @suitoft clothes. The negro walked into the store and tied on a suit, with the apparent intention of making a purchase, but, being fitted, be ran out, and has not sinee been heard from Captain Nimrod M. Baggerly, conductor of & passenger train on the Orange and Alex- andria Railroad, in attempting tw get on thi train yesterday morning, at Catlett's Station, accidentally tell upon the track, and bad both his legs aud arms dreadfully mangled by the car wheels passing over them. He was alive at last accounts, but is not expected to live. The anpual meeting of the stockholders of the Manassas Gap Railroad Company is being beld im Alexandria. Several propositions will be presented to this meeting having reference to the disposal of the road—among them, one to consolidate with the Orange and Alexandria Ratlroxd, and another, to relinquish the read to the boud holders it is said that the oldest inhabitant of Alex- andria is a colored woman, born ip 1755, named Ann Carter. —__.--—__ Unrow War P NEES’ ASSOCIATION.— This association beid & stated monthly meeting i ming in the Cou acil chamber, City Hall, the president.
