The general result of the elections held yes- | Uerday was not unexpected by those who have | paid close attention to the political contest now | going on, but the succes: of the conservative element in Maryland, after the si 'P practice of the radical] party to maintain their power in | that State, and particularly in the city of Bal- i timore, WSs an agreeable surprise to the friends of the Administration. in Balumore, with about 24,000 registered voters, the number of Votes cast accords with the statement in our special dispatch from that city yesterday after_ noon, the whole namber polled for S,ate | Comptrolier being 16,006, of which the con- | Servatives cast ¢,513 and the radicals 7.493, | showing 8 majority of 1,020 for the conserya- tives. This elects the whole city ticket, in- cluding two members of Congress, three State Senaiors and eighteen members of the House of Delegates. This result secures the con- Servatives 3 majority in both branches of the Legislature, and a majority on joint ballot. and the consequent election of a conservative United States Senator to succeed Mr. Cres- well, (probably Governor Swann.) Ex-Gov Frank Thomas, the most outspoken radical in the present Maryland deiegation, is re-elected to Congress In the other States there is a gain of several Conservative members of Uongress, probably three or four. There is no doubt of the re-election, in New York, of Gov. Fenton, by just enough. majority to show conclusively that, (as in Pennsylvania.) if a war Democrat oF conservative Republican had been nomina- ted, the State could have been carried against the Radicals. New York city has rolled up a tremendous Democratic majority. but it seems to have been overcome, as was not un- expected in western New York. Massachu- setts foots up a Radical majerity of some seventy (beusand, and elects a full Republi- can delegation to Congress; also elects two colored men to the State Legislature. New Jersey is strongly radical, and that party has certainly secured the Legislature, which will have to elect a United States Senator. Dela- ware has gone Conservative by a handsome majdrity, as wasexpected. From the Western States, the returns are too scanty to enable us to judge definitely of the resnit in detail, but they seem ail to have gone one way. MABYLAND SCHOOL FUND Baltimore city gave a majority of 4,436 in favor of the State constitutional amendment striking out the 6th section of the Sth article, which provided for a tax of 5 cents on the $100 of taxable property of the State for the creation of aschool fund of $6,000,000. This must not be taken as showing & majority against the public school system of the State.as most of those who voted tor the measure did so on the ground that im the present condition of the State finances every dollar of revenue that can be raised ought to be immediately applied: and that the present generauon should not be taxed to educate the children of succeeding generations, especially at such a period 3s this. ‘when taxation is so burdensome, and when the State and National finances demand such heavy imposition of tax duties. The schooi tax is an entirely different matter. A tax of 15 cents om the $100 is now levied and col- lected by the State for the support of the schools; the sum resulting from this levy is divided smongst the different counties accord. ing to the population. DEPABTMENT OF AGRICULTURE. ‘The Commissioner of Agriculture bas re- ceived from the lmperial Minister of Com- merce, Vienna, Austris, through Mr. Loosey: the Austriam Consul General at New York’ about 100 variedes of cereal and vegetable Seeds, collected from premium varieties shown at the great exhibition held at Vienna. in June last, and presented by the Austrian Govern- ment for the experimental farm of the U.S. Ag- ricultural Department. This donation ¢m- braces nearly every variety of thejcereals and vegetable seeds in geaeral use in our country, and itis hoped that some of them will prove yaluable acquisitions to the Agriculture of the United Stites. These seeds are not for distri- bution, but will be used simply for experiment upon the Agricultural grounds. LAND OPBRATIONS IN MISSOUBI.
