a THE EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Editer and Pr ieter. WASHINGTON CITY: “SY READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGR. SEE OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE: | GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. " TO ADVERTISERS. The competing for the Government advertising Under the recentaet of Congress cirecting such Sdvertising to be made in the two daily news- Papers of Washington Raving the largest circulation : Evesine STaz. .715 copies per day. ‘Chromecle.. 5.068 « Intelligencer. 35592 « « The returns of advertising by the city papers for the quarter ending September 30, 1966, as taken from the books of the Internal Revenue Office, are as follow: Evenine Stak. Intelligencer . oo eee 13,106 Chronicle... « 10,209 Republican 4,781 EXIT MAXIMILIAN. We publish elsewhere a letter received in this city giving with some particularity sever- al items of Mexican news, the most important of these being a statement of the ceparture of Maximilian from the City of Mexico on the 234 ult., and his anticipated arrival at Vera Craz, from which postit is expected he will sail for Europe in the Ausirian frigate Dandolo, now awaiting bis coming. We have no means of verifying there statements, but have no doubt they are substantially correct, although some of them require explanation. Tus, it is said that slaximilian resigned verbally in favor of General Bazaine, and directly afterwards it is asserted tbat General Castelnau took posses- ston of the palace and assumed the reins of Government. lt would seem as though we | never will be able to get a clear, or even intel- ligible account from Mexico of occurrences there. Whether it is owing to any peculiar ef- fect of the climate or the generally distracted condition of the country we sre unable to say, but letters from that quarter are usually so mrddiled that many readers “give up” Mexican jutelligence as they woulda tough conundram. If Max has departed for good it is probable tha‘, for @ season at least, anarchy will prevail: ‘woree, if possible, than anything that has pre- ceded ut, even in that unbappy land, as we can reckon up already some three or Jour contest- ants for ‘he “throne of the Montezamas” which, after all. seemsa prize which brings ruin upon all who are so unfortunate as to gain it. (ien. Ca teinau, who it is said has taken possession ot the Mexican capital, and t mporarily raies what is left of the Empire, will beremembered as the rew French Envoy. THE ELECTIONS TO DAY. Elections will be beld to-day im Mas-achu- setts, New Jersey. New York, Michigan, I'l; Bois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Missouri, Kan- sas, Maryland, and Delaware. Ninety-one members of the House of Representatives will be chosen, and New York, Lilinois, Missouri, Nevada ana Maryland have each one United States Senator, and Kansas two Senators, de- pending tpon the political complexion of the Legisiatures elected at the same tume. The interest im these elections is much di- minished from the tact that the October elec- tions resulted in leaving the Radical majority in Congress undiminished: and that party has already asurplas of twenty-one members be- yond the two-thirds vote required to pass a bill over the President's veto. The seven States in which the elections bave been held have returned sixty Radieals to twelve Con- servatives. There is, therefore, no hope in the elections to-day *o get beyond a one-third vote in the House. The interestin the elections of to-day is mainly ofa local character. THE BALTL MU z. ‘The upshot of this affair, as well as its en- Ure bistory, shows that Governor Swann and his advisers have proved aitogether unequal to whe emergency, and have been out-manen- vered throughout. The radicals, we see, are piuming themselves amazingly, as they have some cause, over the “eucher™ of their op- ponents. In this vicinity considerable interest is felt in the result in Maryland, a fact due w the ex- traordinary collision of authority ia Baltimore. We learn that de=pite the apparent success o the radical programme, there is so strong a feel- ing of indignation throughout the State at what as deemed the pettifogging tactics of the radicals that a very heavy conservative yote Will be pollea. earceemtimienpaey tinthaatine NOTICE TO GOVERNMENT DEPOSITORIES.
