A meeting of subscribers to the stock of the New York, Alexandria, Washington, and Georgetown Steamship Line was held last night at the Board of Trade Rooms, bringing together more of our prominent business men ‘han we bave lately seen in consultation. It was stated that about $47,000 of the $80,000 required for the District quota Bad been sub- scribed. Complaint was made by gentlemen who had interested themselves in forwarding this great enterprise, of the apathy exhibited | by the people of Washington in regard to it, One of oar active business men, who has labored zealously im canvassing to get the requisite subscriptions, said he was ‘feot-soe and heart-sore” with the work of tramping about making fruitle-s appeals to the public spirit of eitizens in behalf of an enterprise that promised so much for our prosperity. BA proposition was received from the New York parties mterested in the project to or- anize on the basis of the present subscription: So as to get the boats on im season to secure the tall freight business. After some discpssion: i! was beld to be inadvisable to undertake an organization until the fall amount of £50,000 ras been subscribed here, so that the contro}. ‘ing miluemce should be held in the Distri > beyond peradventure. F.gures and data were given to show that the enterprise cannot well fail to realize.a profit of twenty-five per cent, to the stockliolders, aside from the general in- crease to the prosperity of the commamity in_ sured by it. The canvassing comm: was enlarged by adding to it the names of others of our leading citizens, and the committee are engaged to-day in their public spirited work. 1t is to be hoped, for the credit of the District, that this final effort will beasuccess Ifin a community of 120,000 inhabitants, we cannot Taise $o0,((0 for so desirable a result,we may as well Isy us down to sleep the sleep of tne dead. BALTIMORE The reports in the B.itimore Papers of this morning, in reference to the feeling which pre vailed im that city yesterday, in consey nence of the removal of the Police Commis-ioners by Governor Swanp, are not so alarming as the dispatches from there yesterday led us to be- lieve. There was some excitement during the day, but it seems to have subsided before night. which leads us to hope that there will be no collision, but that any parties feeling them. selves aggrieved by the action of the Governor will seek a legal remedy. By reference to our report of affairs in Baltimore yesterday, pub- Nisbed elsewhere, it will be seen that 1aflam- matory resolutions were introduced into the Baltimore Councils last night, but were not adopted and the Boards took noaction. Riot amd bloodshed will not mend matters, and in this case ft is acknowledged that the legal tri- Duoals are competent to act. if necessary. picsass_snntonnledly wanders ENGLish Orgra.—The Richi: troupe con- unue to fill the National Theatre every eve- ming to its utmost capacity, and the large au- dience present last night were delighted at t exquisite personation of «Marie”’in the+ Dai ter of the Kegiment” by Miss Richings. As arch and prjuant as ever, she gave the song® with @ spirit and effect, unusual, even for her. She was hardly as well supported as on pre- vious occasions. She has a benefit this eve- ning when “The Rose of Uastile” will be pre- sented, and to-morrow there will be a matinee when “The Doctor of Alcantara” will be given. An order issued by Colonel Roberts will be promulgated to the futhful of the Brotherhood to-morrow he by Senator Fleming, on authority of the Fe- nian President. The same T will be multaneously submitted to ali the associations throughout the State and the far West. The document takes unmistakable grounds as to the probability of another and early invasion of Canada, which will. of course, be hastened by the executions of the sentenced men, but in any event will not be long deferred. The ad- dress further urges consolidated and unremit- ‘ing activity Im view of the fact that the con- Singency of actual warfare may be upon them Mary moment. The organization of a Fenian regiment bas been commenced and is progress- ‘og with spirit. A liberal subscription of money was made to-day in aid of Captain O'Brien, confined in Mountjoy p: mn, Ireland. et PINANCTAL.—The New York money mar- set continues steady.
