With the new straight line, at & general width of fifty feet, more or less, the ‘nal, if thoroughly dredged, will have for most of tbe time im the day a deep. steady, and strong current towards the Navy Yard, which will furnish a good dram for the sewerage of the city. The reclaimed ground may be added to the public grounds north of the canal, or sold. If sold, they will more than pay for the expenses of straightening the line. The health of the city will be insured by the arraugement, and the canal itself may be made something of an ornament by having bridges of the width of the street, asin Baltumore, and by planting a row of trees upon both panks, with a simple towpath on the nortn one for cana! beats, if here sball be cal for anything of the kind.
