THE EVENING STAR. | A®cCENT OF Moust Hoop.—A correspondent of the Springfield (Mass ) Republican gives an | Account of the ascent of Mount Hood, Oregos. recently, by Professor A. Wood and a party o: gentiemen. lt would seem wat Mount Hood is really & volcano, and that. it is the highest mountain in the United States—17,600 feet higb. He says ' “The summut area is of y limited dimen- sions—a crescent in shape, half a mile in length, and trom three to fifty feet in widtb. | itis a fearfal place, as it is the imminest brow | of & precipice om the north, sheer down not | less than & vertical mile of bare columnar rock This height is lifted so far above all other heights (except the four distant snow- clad peaks to the north, and Mount Jeffersonon the -outh) that the coumtry beneath seemed depressed to a uniform level, and the horizon | retreated to a divtance of more than two hua- | dred miles, incloding nearly all Oregon and | Washington Territories. The sublimity and gtandeur of that view 1 must leave to the imagination of the reader. A canon of enor- Mouse depth plunges down along the southeast | bank, and is filled in part by a glacier evident- ty ih motion, and having below a very abrupt | termination. Terminal and lateral moraines Mark its course. and atorrentof water issues from beneath. While we delayed here an avaiancb of rocks, an immense mass, started by the wind, thundered down the lett wall of this canon several thousand feet, and its track ‘was marked by a trail ef white smoke. On the west side of the ancrent crater, at the base of a vast craggy pinnacle of rocks (2 portion of the ancient rim of the crater.) still an open abyss, whence issue constantly volumes ofa strongly sulpbereous smoke. That there is | also heat there is evident from the immense de- | pression of the snow about this piace—de- | pressed not less than one thousand feet below the snows which fill to the brim other portions of the ancient cra‘er.” Ove STEP FROM THE ALTAR TOTHE GuavE— Death of a Newly Married Couple —One week ago Mr. T Lavkoff was married to Miss Agnes Krveit. both of Newport. Kentucky. The young and happy couple enjoyed their honeymoon on Priday, Saturaay, and Sunday, determining that on Monday morning they would settle | down to & commencement of their new life with all its business, responsibilities, trials, &c. On Monday morning they rose at an early hout, and robing themsetves tn theirevery-day attire, went to brenkfast. Each complainea of feelumg seriously ill, and neither could eat. The husband was compelled almost immediately to Tene to bed, and in a few minutes his wife followed Lim. A physician was sent for, who, upon arriving in the sick chamber, and atter examination of the patients, pronounced their disease the cholera. Immediate attention was given to them, bet during the day they con- tinned to grow worse, and at 4\ o'clock the busbend died. His body was removed to an acjounimg room. His wife was also in a col- Japeed condition, and at £¥ o'clock she too fol- jowed her husband. into the dark valley and shadow of death. The bridegroom and bride were robed in their wedding clothes, and on ‘Tuesday both were buried in the same grave.— Cmeinnati Enquirer. A NEw TRICK.—Yesterday Madame De Layeand her son gave an exhibition on the trapeze at Jones's Wood. for the benefit of the Masovic Halland Asylum Fund.
